Hank had gotten into collecting retro PC games, and came across an interesting find: A pre-2000 yaoi visual novel! Nowadays, visual novels are a dime a dozen, but back in the mid-90's an actual published gay-centric visual novel was rare indeed. And it was in seemingly good condition, with the exception of a large stain on the box (which the seller described as ketchup). This blemish brought it down to a very reasonable price, with the compact disc inside being near-perfect condition. Being a little more comfortable with gay attraction after a couple dozen times fucking Dan, he only wrestled with his decision for a minute before purchasing.

He came home after classes and was surprised to see the game resting against his door. He didn't remember buying expedited shipping, and couldn't recall if the seller was local. Also, why was it not in some sort of box for safe shipping? Did someone open it? Despite its odd arrival, seemed to be in the same condition described on the online listing. He dismissed this odd occurrence and brought it inside.

That evening he took it for a spin, and found it was a pretty enjoyable experience, although a bit short. He was able to get to one of the endings within 30 minutes. It was a cute ending, but more suggestive than pornographic. He started over and considered which of his dialogue options would lead to an ending involving a sex scene with the titular Horse Boyfriend.

His second time through was odd. Some of the dialogue from the Horse Boyfriend seemed a little more... aggressive. Sometimes a little out of character. Was it supposed to be different for each playthrough? That was pretty advanced... but it wasn't advertised on the box. Also the game would hitch up here and there, with some of the passages of music hanging, the soft notes of the soundtrack becoming grating and tinny out of his cheap computer speakers.

Finally, he maneuvered his way to a sex scene, his protagonist finding himself in the bedroom of Horse Boyfriend, and he was presented with the beautiful erotic art he was promised. Hank's cock was out, the amorous conversation and promises of sex between the characters having gotten his motor running, and he was playing with a single practiced hand.

Annoyingly, the game hitched, the music once again pausing on a single note. However, the dialogue continued, and the art changed. The Horse was looking directly out at the screen, as if he was also distracted by the misbehaving music. His expression was unreadable. Hank was struck by a vague sense of unease, as the hitch did not correct itself like it had before. The note became louder.

The room seemed to darken. Hank couldn't decide if it was his imagination. His eyes flitted away, and back again. The Horse was closer.

Much closer.
