"Baiting" is a known technique used by abusers. They do something or let something happen that is meant to "bait" the target into responding in a way that "justifies" the abuser to unleash on them whatever is bothering them at the time. (By crying, saying no, or "giving attitude", the target risks even more abuse and back lash)
Often it's not even anything the target did as the abuser will take their anger out on the target for everything that upsets them.
