The Truman Show is a 1998 American psychological drama that left a 12-year-old me with my jaw wrapped around my ankles. Our protagonist is the eponymous Truman who unwittingly discovers that his entire life is the centre of an elaborate reality TV show. It was such a wild movie that the delusion about being the focus of a TV show would inform a very real-world (albeit rare) paranoia. I saw it again the other day and it's still as intriguing as it was with the first viewing.

The comments at the beginning of this pod discuss the previous topic which is largely around suicide.

Love Amsterdam! So much to see & very safe. One thing I will say is taxis are an absolute rob! €50 for airport to hotel. We asked at the desk when we went in & she said that was normal! Going home we got train to airport for €7 each. I’d also suggest the Lookout, swings that hang out over the top of a very high building, you can see the whole city. I’d make sure to video that 😂

On leaving, Truman realises what has happened and a pro bono lawyer convinces him to sue the tv company for damages. Its a huge case that makes its way to the Supreme Court where the case is dismissed down partisan lines with the right wing majority of the court holding the adoption certificate as lawful and the corporation successfully argues that the tv show was its way of providing safety and security to their legal dependent. (the left wing dissents arguing that the situation was indentured servitude). Truman spirals and starts to believe that the he is being followed and watched. He descends into madness believing that the court case was created by the corporation to ‘continue the show’. He spirals, ultimately realising the only way to leave ‘the show’ is to take his own life. The world is stunned. Congress tries to enact the ‘Truman Bill’ which prevents corporations from legally adopting people. The bill fails. That fall ‘The New Truman Show’ debuts and although there is mass outcry in the media, the premiere episode is the highest rated tv programme in history.

This film was always on my watch list but I never got round to watching it, so I did what you said, paused the pod and went to watch it. Yes, as an adult watching it for the first time, I was a bit mind blown. Also I was very confused for the first half of the film. When I started to grasp the concept I thought it was absolute genius, with the product placement, and the fact they were all in on it. I think if I rewatched it the film would make more sense and I'd pick up on more details each time.

Loved the pod as always! I've not seen this film but I wonder if you've heard of anyone who livestreams their life? There's one guy called Michael Gerry that livestreamed his life for a year on youtube a few years back. It's essentially just big brother but in your own home, isn't it. I know there's city-scape webcams and stuff you can find online that are quite nice to pop on whilst working, and some people share their pet cams for chickens and goats etc. It's mad what people will watch, me included. I was once really into Slow TV, where you could watch stuff like a boat going down a stream for 8 hours, or people making yarn for ages. Hope you're having fun in amsterdam!

The only thing I remember about the Nicole Kidman Stepford Wives was her character playing out the consequences of producing a Truman Show world. And now that’s the accepted Disney park experience, visitor and worker alike. Frightening.
