Brian Shaffer's Wikipedia page describes him as a current medical student at the Ohio State University which is particularly difficult to swallow given that he disappeared over 17 years ago. In 2006 at the start of spring break, Shaffer was out drinking with friends when he was last spotted on CCTV inside a bar. The same CCTV would not capture him leaving the venue which is why this one remains such a puzzling fixation for Internet sleuths.

This pod contains discussions of suicide.

Great pod as always. Listening on my way to see family in Yorkshire. I completely forgotten about this case and it still baffles me how someone can just disappear and haven’t been found till this day. Makes me think he’s still locked in someone’s basement somewhere but that’s just my dark thoughts XD Was in Bournemouth last week on the day of to go and see my brother uni ready for September. We both kicked ourselves when we realised pride was the day we were there and that there was a high chance you and Nova would be there. Hopefully we will be there next year!!

Henlo lymp, new High Priest here and loving the pod. I love when you and nerva go in on the same thing; for example, the commenter who wanted 1 minute long segments. instead of 30 minutes. Also was that daft boy you dated, was he the same one that made fun of you for using sophisticated words? I hope that eye is better. Also would love to see more zooming in on peoples faces when they look at your camera while you vlog. Hooroo, James

Plot twist. What if he did run away to start a new musical career, turns out he's daft punk, marshallow, or some other masked musician.

Very interesting pod, can’t say I was aware of this case before. I feel like, because it is so hard for someone to fully disappear these days with cctv, phones, internet etc. it usually ends up being that the person has passed away and the body has just not been found (or in some rare cases the person is trapped somewhere or had been taken as a child and kept isolated and so many years have passed if they have been seen their appearance has changed so much they often go unnoticed). So unfortunately in this case I feel like either he snuck away and did sadly end his own life or he may or may not have had plans of leaving but ran afoul of a mugger or something and was killed.

Hiya! I don’t have any relative information to the specific case of the pod outside of theories, but I did live in Northeast Ohio for most of my childhood and early adulthood frequenting Columbus. (My one set of grandparents lived in Upper Arlington outside of downtown Columbus and near OSU’s (Ohio State University) campus, where my grandfather also worked as a professor for many years. Oddly enough, although I do not have a specific connection to the geological and archeology departments, we would frequent the Orton Geological Museum on OSU’s campus. Your uncle and my grandfather may have known each other in passing as faculty members at the university or as neighbors.) Based on the pod and the Wikipedia post, I do have some ideas about being semi-familiar with the surrounding area where this would have happened. I believe it could be highly likely that Brian could have easily put on a change of clothes as a disguise and left. Parts of OSU’s campus around the area he went missing can be fairly poorly lit at night, as it is not directly on the main campus and is more downtown and on side streets. I could also see that a very likely scenario, as they had been drinking, is that he could have fallen into one of the rivers that are in the area. On the Wiki post, they noted the father consulting a psychic, who suggest Brian was in a body of water near a bridge and a pier. Love the pod as always, and looking forward to next week’s edition!

I agree with the comment on last week’s pod regarding you doing a Joanna Lumley parody - you mentioned ‘what if she saw it’, well I live in the same tiny village as her parents so could always knock on the door and ask them to show her😂

Hello hello! Long time no comment I hope you’re doing well. Couple of thoughts headed your way here I hope you don’t mind! Firstly your theory on this is (imo) the correct one I couldn’t think of any other realistic explanation. Secondly, just finished watching the new pride video and wondered why you stopped performing at borne free, was it so our Gens Padam could really flourish?? Finally, I watched a YouTube video yesterday about people who have sat on the sofa for so long (years without moving not even to go to the shitter) that their skin fused to the sofa, their skin became attached to the cushions and they physically couldn’t get off it because their body and the sofa were one thing. It was the weirdest thing but could make an interesting (albeit rancid) pod ep/ bit of reading if you find the thought of that as fascinating as I did. Made me think of the ep you did about that poor woman who was deceased in her flat for years before she was found, makes you think how these things happen.

Just joined the Patreon and I love how this latest episode is about a true crime case in my home state of Ohio. Love you both, so glad to be part of the cult with all these legendary creatures

First time commenter, loving the pod! I have heard you mention the case of Abigail Williams and Liberty German. I live about 10 miles from where this happened In Delphi, IN, and they have apprehended and charged a man named Richard Allen. It is a huge thing here, he had to be moved to a different facility for how they are treating him, there are sealed court documents, etc..could be more there now for a deeper dive for an episode. Thanks for all the content hornbags!

Not related to this at all, just hoping the next pod will be about the Barbie movie 🤞🏼

This disappearance of Brian sounds like a guy who has the weight of the world on his shoulders and was desperate to get away. In too deep and can’t see a way out (medical school he’s not into, girlfriend who is maybe way more serious about the relationship than he is). The death of his mom probably just tipped him right over the edge. Everything just seems to point to his disappearance being entirely his choice. Wherever he is, I hope he’s living his best life, probably with a monstrous beard in the backwoods.
