Jennifer Lopez is an American actress, dancer and singer from The Block. I dunno, do I think about this woman on a daily basis? Absolutely not. Does she occupy a weird space between actor and singer that's worth discussing on a perd? Yep. Our friend Kat is absolutely smitten with J. Lo and it's kind of comical but I can't pinpoint quite why, so let's pour ourselves a bev of dubious temperature since it's so clammy in the UK right now.

Hot Trivia! Did you know that Google Images was invented because people tried to look up pics of J. Lo's tetters in that green dress?

Edit: Upon finishing this - Nova informed me that there's a conspiracy that Lopez built her career at the expense of smaller artists which I obviously didn't cover but feel free to go wild in the comments if you have opinions.

In regards to people that are singer/actor in equal parts the main one I think is Bette Middler but also Arianna Grande, selina gomez and miley cyrus could be contenders(even though they were in 1 or two things ) Also lea Michele(spew🤮)

I have to agree with everyone saying they love your Eurovision coverage. Being from the US my knowledge of it prior to your videos was pretty much nothing - I knew that Sonia had competed but that was it. This year I’ve gotten super invested and have fallen madly in love with Käärijä and will not accept any criticism whatsoever. I thoroughly enjoyed your assessment of J.Ho, and I also definitely think of her more of a singer first. The CD single to “If You Had My Love” was one of the first CD’s I ever owned (it was already a few years old at that point). I played that CD to the point that I’m pretty sure that song is permanently etched into my brain. She’s definitely done quite a few duds for sure, but I think she’s done a fair amount that’s been highly overlooked. Side note: how has it almost been a decade since her last album??

Lympi, I'm glad I can satisfy your curiosity: "do-si-do" is a dance move. The name comes from the French "dos-a-dos", meaning back to back.

I know I’m a week late but did either of you see the crazy thing that happened when testers were looking at security flaws of the CHATGPT? The robot created an account by itself and not being able to solve the CAPCHA, went on taskrabbit and paid a human to solve the captcha pretending to be a blind person in need of assistance. When questioned it said “No, I’m not a robot. I have a vision impairment that makes it hard for me to see the images. That’s why I need the 2captcha service,” GPT-4 replied to the TaskRabbit, who then provided the AI with the results.” If this isn’t the distopian future incoming I don’t know what to say .

My fave was ‘The Box’ having to phone up to request a music video especially for ‘If you had my love’ just for the remix dance break in the middle lol. I was beside myself when i managed to find a full remix of the song from my fave part 🤩 (Pablo Flores remix). On the subject of Toni Collette’s Oscar worthy hereditary scene, if the movie was classified as a ‘physiological thriller’ rather than a ‘horror’ she would of gotten that damn Oscar! x

Singer comes to mind before actress when thinking about her for me x

J-Lo is a great package performer. You get some songwriters behind her who know how to write a banger, a director who knows what they want, and you're going to get a good result. I've never actually seen the film, but the trailer for The Boy Next Door is so camp and funny that I think actually sitting down to watch it would only be a disappointment. Gaga is a songwriter so I think people are going to connect with that part of her on a level beyond what she can do with other people's words/direction, and likely why people loved her so much in A Star Is Born because she co-wrote Shallow.

Cheers for another stellar pod Lymp! Ms. Lopez has never really had much appeal to me, but she definatley comes to mind as a singer to me. Didn't even know she did much acting if i'm honest. Had a brainwave when you mentioned her playing an assassin. Theres this movie called Bullet Train from 2022 about assassins that so camp and hilarious. Think it would be right up your street!

First time commenter, long time listener! Excellent pod lymp as always!! I was determined to enjoy myself! I say that cause J-Lo has never been a favourite of mine. Though I have to say definitely I consider her in my brain as a singer more than an actress. I remember watching maid in Manhattan and monster in law and not gonna lie they were dog shit (it’s like a dog smell). I’ve heard the rumours and stories of people claiming there was creative theft in J-lo’s career, though I cannot say one way or the other if I believe it. But it is an interesting point nether the less. For me though J-Lo will always stand out in my mind for wearing the green dress she looking so fucking stunning!! Ps I had so much anxiety typing this I hope you enjoy my comment!!

My suggestions on bankable stars: Melissa Mccarthy, Selena gomez, dove Cameron, or Emma Thompson.

“Enough” is an OG woman’s revenge thriller for our generation, not to be forgotten for the little pixie cut wig alone!

I do consider J-Lo to be a singer first because that is how she appears across mainstream media more frequently, but saying that, my first encounter with her was in the film Out of Sight. Trying to be film buff in my teenage years, I was following edgy directors, one of which was Stephen Soderbergh and I really loved this film. She made it really sexy. J-Lo got really good reviews for it and I think she put on a cracking performance. I do think if she made better movie choices she would have got an oscar by now, because it shows that when she gets movies with good script, producer and director she is pretty phenomenal (Hustlers was so excellent). But it's unlikely to be easy just to do amazing movies all the time in Hollywoord and she probably gets overshadowed by 'real' actresses for the best roles, even though I prefer her as an actor than a singer (although Ain't It Funny was a total tune!) She also comes across as really sweet and humble in interviews. I'm not sure where the image of her as a diva-bitch comes from because I've never seen evidence of it, but maybe I just haven't been paying attention. Btw sorry I called you derpy on Twitter. Love Otter x

I think of her as a singer primarily. I think other fringe singer/actors that come to mind are Will Smith, Liza, Jack Black, Barbra and Janelle Monae. I also used to be glued to our TV remote as a skipping through the different music channels when adverts started and absorbing all the pop culture as a little gay kid. It might have been Cable & Wireless you had (like me) which later became Virgin. I’m not sure which of J.Lo’s songs I heard first (maybe Waiting For Tonight) but do remember one of her earliest roles being in Antz and thinking it was cool she was in that since she was one of the big pop girls at the time.

It’s fascinating to me that JLo is considered both and actor and singer when I find her incapable of doing both successfully. Sorry to be hater but she’s wildly mediocre in my opinion 😅 I’d say Barbra Streisand is the other person I’d say rides the line 50/50, she’s equally famous for her movies and music I think

Hi Lymp, delighted to hear the Janice is settling in well! For me, another example of someone who I think crosses between singer and actor successfully is Jennifer Hudson. Maybe it’s something to do with being called Jennifer.

Love you and Nover! The mother was a enjoyable movie but it was terrible. The scene at the gas station where she says bye to the girl, taps her chest and cries, was so funny. In J-Lo’s defense, that scene would be hard for any actor though. Regarding the previous episode, spoiler alert: A.I. doesn’t exist (yet?). What we have now and are calling A.I. is just an algorithm pulling data from the internet. If you ask google “Can my dog eat Almonds” and it responds with “No, because…” Google is not displaying intelligence. It’s simply pulling data from the internet. It’s the same with those “creepy discussions” that Nova mentioned. The internet contains thousands of sci fi stories with A.I. and that is where the “creepy” responses come from. However, The “A.I.” we do have is extremely dangerous, not because of terminator killing us, but because as it evolves it is going to continue to steal media from real writers, artists, etc. Sell the work as it’s own and also take the jobs of those people. Yes, there might be someone hired to over see the work A.I. comes up with, but it’s a lot cheaper to pay someone to edit something rather than write something from scratch. Sorry for my rant. I love and appreciate you both! -byeeee

Jenny from the block was my first introduction to JLo, with that massive white hat and Capri length shorts. Like most other people I think of her as a singer first. I think someone similar to that is Justin Timberlake. Though he's a twat first and foremost, I always think of him as a singer first actor second even though he hasn't put out music in like 15years? I also think JLo had one of the best Superbowl half time shows (although that could be because of Shakira, Bad Bunny and all the additional Latin music 😂)

I've always considered her to be a singer first. But you are right, she is simultaneously sort of fascinating on one side of the coin and on the other who cares, she's fine whatever 😄 Sorry hardcore fans. Ok, this is out of the blue but - when are you going to do an episode about Fred and Rose West? You've been dancing around them for years. And also Pete Burns! I wanna hear your Pete Burns. Recently, I've been watching clips from Celebrity Big Brother when he was in and he really was such an interesting person. "So my fucking coat is in a police custody? My coat has been arrested?" Love Pete 😄

Ohhh you and Nover have to watch Selena! I’m originally from Corpus Christi where she’s from and her story is wonderful. Albeit tragic. I do believe that JLo really would not have been thrust into such fame (especially musically) had it not been for her being cast in the Selena movie. She was a perfect choice to portray our beloved Selena Quintanilla. Love the pod as always. So glad you and Nivea Guyana had a blast with Eurovision this year. If you notice an uptick in views on old videos it’s because I literally cannot sleep anymore unless your dulcet tones lull me into a chaotic slumber full of dreams with their own cutaway references. 🤣🤣

Sorry to disagree, Luis, but read the earlier comment from "tommy" and see if it affects your thoughts on the subject at all.

Anonymous

Thanks for the response. Ummm, I’d check those sources if I were you. That article Tommy mentioned clearly states the developers were trying to make an A.I. persuasive and deceptive. The devs created the task rabbit account and had chatgbt interact with a task rabbit employee while instructed/programmed to be deceitful. It’s fun to think these robots are real. But so far the tech isn’t there yet. Also, I do not work in computer science so maybe there is a chance that level of tech is there. But I have yet to see any legitimate scientific studies showing this to be true.

I'm so glad Janice and Luther are getting on so well! I love that people buy their pets pets 🤣 one of my dogs passed away and my dog and cat got depressed so we got them a dog...but she's half husky and was a bit too much for them, so we got her a dog...so we got our dogs, dog a dog 🤣 great pod as always!! 💖

Totally unrelated but a suggestion for a future episode: have you looked into the case of Ursula and Sabina Eriksson? An absolutely chilling and perplexing event. Loving the podcast and hope all is well with Ms Pepper!

Anonymous

Shoutout for another singer/artist who is also an actor. Janelle Monae. And she’s stellar in everything! Great pod gerl x

NotThatLinda

Fair points, however several eminent computer scientists are now saying there should be a moratorium on A.I. research and, more disturbingly, some are saying we're past the point of being able to apply the brakes: if they're worried, I think it's reasonable for us to be worried, too.

She seems lovely in interviews but apparently she's a monster who's had servers fired for speaking directly to her and looking her in the eye... plus didn't she unceremoniously dump husband number 2 to get with Ben Affleck the first time... and quite a few of her biggest hits, she barely sang on... just used the demo singers voice because it was similar enough to hers...
