In January of 2018 in California, 911 received a bizarre call from what sounded like a very young female child. What transpired was a wild interaction between police and Jordan Turpin, who courageously escaped from her abusive, religious parents - a couple who had spent the best part of the previous 30 years imprisoning their 13 children.

This is another potentially triggering pod with some rough details.

Oof this was harrowing. I remember this being on the news when she escaped and I was absolutely shocked, its scary how many times this happens across the world. I just hope that the kids have been able to heal, and just live their lives now. I did find it really cheery that Jennifer just danced in her hospital room knowing she was free (but the image of that Britney "And Im dancing" dancing witch clip you use popped into my head haha)

As a former child protective worker, I can say we got reports often for "educational neglect." I assume it's by census data or hospital records that we would get those reports. Mostly they were kids who had been to school at one point but stopped going. But if a parent confirms they are homeschooling, there's nothing the government can really do. Perhaps if they were born at home, there was no record at all.

There are people in this world who are desperately wanting children and spending thousands of dollars on IVF. Then you hear about these types of parents and it makes you sick that we live in a unjust world.

Not Lymp saying “it feels really tacky” opening a dark pod with a relevant song as if I didn’t just re-listen to the Jill Dando episode which she opened with Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” 😂😂😂 Wouldn’t have it any other way.

I know people see it as their god given right to procreate and you get into a very grey area thinking about it too much but as a society we have established test after test to allow you drive and work certain jobs and, I assume in the US to own weapons. But there isn’t some sort of test required for being a parent? Like at all. For introducing a life into the world, arguably the hardest job of all? No evaluations, just to check you’re not a massive psychopath who’d chain up your children. Anyway, rant over, those poor poor kids! Absolutely heartbreaking.

Good for you for not wanting to shit on religious people. I, however, want to take a huge steaming pile on these fucking lunatics. Religion is the cause of so much shit in the world. It’s hilarious that when people are being described, a “religious” or “church going” person is seen as a good person. We all know that in reality it probably means they are absolute nutcases. These parents in particular should just be offed 👋🏼

First of all I have to say that I died when I saw you were doing Planterina for the next parody and I think it was absolutely hilarious. I think I watched it like 4 times, it was so funny, I think she will think so as well. As for the pod, I recently watched everything I could on their family and I couldn't wrap my head around the comment about the ones arm being the size of a small child or baby... How does that even happen? Thanks for another interesting pod, I quite like the bleak ones but im a true crime junky.

This case is further proof that parenthood should require a licence and that human suffering in the name of religion is an eternal blight on the world. The most surprising revelation of the episode? Full Of It is edited! 😘

My god that’s a harrowing story and makes me think of the saying “all kids deserve parents, not all parents deserve kids.” Those poor kids deserved so much better and that young girl is so brave and SMART for getting out when she could and bringing evidence to save herself and her siblings! The amount of level headedness it must take to do that in such a scary situation is mind boggling, I can’t imagine how frightened and overwhelmed she must have been. (Also wanted to say thanks for all the great content, I became a Patron quite recently and your podcast has been making my weekly workouts and cycling at home go by SO much faster!)

I’m of the position that life is a responsibility and not a pure gift and I know something of this story so…I hope that young woman is smiling. And thank you for the consistent content.

Olympia you are the perfect person to hear talking about bleak and very serious subjects like this because not only do you handle them with such sensitivity and respect, you bring your comforting and naturally funny self to it in a way that isn't jarring but puts us all at ease. I really learn a lot from the pod as well as just having a familiar and charming monologue going on in the background other times. What are your thoughts/would you ever do a pod on the Saw films? I can't say I'm an avid fan of them but I'm going through a phase of being really into the grunginess and darkly creative nature of the 1st film, and I also find the character Adam a bit tasty (as one might say). Love to you and Nova, the chanelle is absolutely my place of online comfort. Also just realised I'm wearing a dazzling Novympia TShirt as I'm writing this, it's one of my favourite garments. Xx P.s. Last time you told me off for my punctuation so I hope I'll be marked for improvement this time!

Great pod! I am a teacher in Canada. Although each province has their own individual education laws, I believe it is not against the law to keep your child home from school if you’re homeschooling them. In my parents generation, they used to have truancy officers that would report back to the school if kids were not in the classroom. I never had this in highschool but we did have an attendance secretary and she was a huge bitch. Now-a-days, teachers and principals call home, and it takes a lot of time away from other stuff. As well, in publicly funded schools, attendance equals money; the more kids that are sitting in your classroom, the more money your school will receive so if attendance or enrolment drops then the funds dry up and that’s why some teachers lose their jobs. In general, I am skeptical of homeschooling because it undermines the teaching profession. In Canada you have to be licensed to teach in a publicly funded school but then a parent can assume the role of an educator automatically with zero skills in the matter. So, unfortunately, kids like the ones you discussed fly under the radar pretty easily.
