In continuation of our stellar actor series, today we're talking about the EGOT powerhouse Viola Davis. In my mind she was really only on everyone's radar following the release of Doubt, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for a startlingly short role which clocked in at about 7 minutes out of the total runtime. With other notable roles in The Help and How To Get Away With Murder she's solidly one of the toppest birds going.

I agree that the only thing I can remember from doubt was Viola Davis. It's funny, MovieBitches made a short compilation on their review of TÁR where you don't remember the film only the Oscar bait scene moments (ms Davis appears in there for fences) well worth a look and a giggle (2.55 mins into the review if anyone wants a time stamp) :)

I love me some viola but get legacy will live on by me and a friend at work have a running gag where in very very serious situations, we turn to each other and just say” why is your penis on a dead girls phone” to break the tension

morning doll, listening to this on my way to my placement (sadly, won’t finish the rest till i’m home) for me Viola in how to get away with murder is my favourite. She’s such a powerhouse and she’s so incredible in any movie and or show she’s in like honestly she steals the show. happy belated birthday meg anne robinson seems a lovely day. xo

Would love a podcast from Dita. “The Dita Diaries: Memoirs of a Janx - a heartwarming rags to riches to rags story of how one woman built a candle making empire on Facebook and then lost it all. She may have been locked out of Facebook but she won’t let herself be locked out of life. Discovering a deep connection to the occult, Dita sets out on a journey deep into her labia majora and forming connections with like minded people all around the world. What is next for Dita? What will life’s badly shuffled pack of cards deal her? Will she ever get access to her Facebook again?”

Oh I do love Viola. The company I work for host a big client event every year and Viola was a guest speaker last year and it was AMAZING. I could listen to her talk about absolutely anything.

ooooooooooooooooooooo

I actually saw Viola Davis speak on a panel at a work event recently and she has SUCH a gravitas about her. I don't know what *that* is, but she has it. I could've listened to her speak for hours. Also, there's a lot of Olivia Colman talk this episode. Have you seen The Favourite? It's one of my all-time fave movies.

Fuck The Favourite (not really it's great), but has anyone seen Tyrannosaur? That's one of Olivia Colman's finest. That's a fucking Oscar performance. It's a very, very hard movie to watch but omg she irreversibly broke me into billion pieces in that one. There's something in her eyes that always gets me. Always. And in Tyrannosaur she's literally ripping your heart out and THAT is not an exaggeration.

I just listened to the Cher podcast and just have to ask, do you just LOVE Carousel Lady too? That and Dark Lady are my two faves haha. Anyway I love Meryl streep too Im such a basic gay but my fave movie with her is Devil Wears Prada. I also love Mamma Mia.. I know it's not your thing and I agree with Miriam Margoyles it's TERRIBLE but I love it and it's cute haha

Great pod! I had watched The First Lady last year when it came out and totally forgot that Viola was in that show. Her portrayal of Michelle Obama was great except for the pursed lips. I probably shouldn’t be criticizing an actor because I am far from that skill set. But, the pursed lips were definitely distracting in that show. Gillian Anderson was good but also had some weird mouth stuff going on in that show. Michelle Pfeiffer’s portrayal of Betty Ford was excellent. Every time Viola had a scene, it felt like all I could look at was her lips! You had mentioned Frances Mcdormand in this pod - there is an excellent HBO miniseries called Olive Kitteridge and I am surprised that series has not gained more attention. She plays a mother who has zero maternal instincts and is a shitty wife to her husband but still has to rear a family. Very dry, very witty, very dark. And who could forget her character in Fargo? She is another pod-worthy actor to explore I think!

Also I think a “rebirth of Dita” in podcast form would be a lovely treat.

Loved Viola in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. I kept forgetting it was her until the credits rolled, remarkable performance. I’d love to see her as Ma in a full biopic of the singer’s life as that film was just a snapshot of her story but there’s so much more history to explore with Ma Rainey, especially her queerness.
