This week we've got an unprecedented topic on the pod in which we discuss a very recent and ongoing disappearance. As of this recording, 45-year-old British woman Nicola Bulley has been missing for 8 days having last been seen walking her dog near the River Wyre on the morning of Friday, January 27. It's important to remember that this is a delicate, very real-world current event but it's particularly baffling as to quite how she vanished.

It's a really sad story, and thank you for being as considerate as you could. Lots of people who cover ongoing cases like this like to spark the wildest theories that I fear give family and friends false hope. I think people get so obsessed with true crime that it leads to people hoping for the most 'dramatic' conclusion, rather than deciding on the most likely one. If Paul her partner is innocent, he has not just lost the love of his life and the mother of his children but he is being besmirched online with zero evidence as a killer. While I agree we should explore all avenues, the most likely solution is that she fell in the river. Bodies can wash up months or even years afterwards. The body of Sarah Wellgreen, who was murdered by her partner in Kent, is thought to have been thrown into a river and police haven't found her four years after she went missing.

This pod popped up just as I was starting to rip down the tiles in the kitchen, completely finished getting them down by the end, perfect (yes I was doing this at midnight, no I don’t need you to send help). People become such keyboard warriors when something like this happens. Of course we all have an opinion but attacking anyone’s character is just disgusting when they are going through this & may be completely innocent. I keep thinking of her poor children. I actually froze on the spot when you said there had been an update! You really are at your best when you’re discussing these kinds of cases, could listen for hours 🙂

A trolly shop always feels more luxurious than a basket shop, it's not heavy by the end or does that thing where the basket digs into the side of your thigh the entire time. Understandable how it helps keeps the relationship alive lol 😂 I'm glad to see this covered tastefully, I agree wholeheartedly it's silly going for the partner on how they're behaving. I never liked the whole "they're being a robot" critique. Thankfully I've not gone through too much death in regards to people close to me but the times I have I recall being very "phased out", sometimes not until after a funeral have I been emotional. These so called "body language" experts piping up online need to realise we don't all behave as stereotypically as each other and coming off as "robotic" is often in my opinion a defence mechanism. And assuming he is completely innocent, it's an awful thing for this man to be going through, let alone twitter user animelover420 chiming in on your situation. Good lord. Also it's worth keeping in mind if they've been together for 12+ years he's obviously going to be trying to keep things together for her kids (not sure if the kids are both of theirs or not but regardless). The kids are going to be in various states of confusion and fear and I don't think it's that bizarre for a potential father figure to said children putting on a strong front. I hope this has as much of a "happy ending" as possible. Great pod as always.

This case has baffled me seeing it in the news. I hope everything ends well for Nicola, knowing she’s a mother aswell makes it even sadder. Whenever these things happen it’s always a reminder that anything can happen to anyone at anytime 🙁

I'm so glad you covered this and with such impartiality too. I'm guilty of looking up the river on google maps and reading over the timeline of events, trying to find my own explanation for what could have happened. In a completely stupid sort of way, the thing that most intrigues me is that people claim, "the dog was never on the harness." or that it was often, off the lead when beside the bench where her phone was found there is a massive honking sign that says, "Dogs must be kept on the lead at all times.". I also think the reliability of the witnesses needs to be questioned, as her sending an email and logging into a meeting is not proof that she was still interacting with the phone as another person could have done these things (no one has stated what interaction she had in the call, did she say hello or was she muted from the get-go?). I'm sure the police are withholding a great deal of information (I forget the technical term) but it's that old "Murder She Wrote" style of detective work, where the killer accidentally reveals something only they could know. Unfortunately, I feel that the way the family is revealing facts via Facebook posts might eventually hinder progress as we know cases can be compromised if the jury has been influenced/has knowledge prior to any trial that may come. I hope they do find out what happened to her, for her parent's and children's sake.

She was wearing Wellies, so she expected that her feet might get wet and I haven’t heard any reports of footprints, which I would expect to find had she been close to the river’s edge. Rivers are weied places and even slow rivers can be dangerous. If she fell in she would go into shock from the cold water and her clothing would weigh her down quickly. Very sad story. The river did it.

Great pod as usual, thanks Lympi. I've never been a big believer in coincidence & the fact that there's a missing woman who had been right by a river, says to me she's in the river. On the other hand, there certainly are creeps around who would take advantage of a woman on her own, especially one who kept to a regular routine (i.e. her whereabouts could be predicted): if that is the case, we unfortunately may never find out what happened.

Please do a podcast about Jeffrey Dahmer... i watched the film "My Friend Dahmer" from (2017) free on YouTube in the US followed by "Dahmer: Monster the Jeffrey Dahmer Story" (2022) on Netflix. Some real dark disturbing stuff but it was worth the watch for me.

I was very tempted to comment on the last pod asking you to do one on this case but wasn’t sure if you’d feel iffy about it with it being so current. The wildest thing to me is that, even though the husband was working from home and there is proof of his whereabouts at the time, people are still running with the theory that it was him and the sister. So unless he hired a hitman it’s just ridiculous. Whole thing reminds me of “Ellie Goulding says she can't believe there are more than 800 missing people in the UK. "Where the fuck are they all?" she said” Hope you both and Luther are alright xx

I was going to ask you if you are planning to go see Knock at The Cabin! I remember you saying that you're a fan of Shyamalan so assumed you would be I thought it was pretty good! The end of the world stuff was a bit uninteresting and bordering on being too Shyamalany but I enjoyed the psychological horror-ness of it and thought it was good overall. And Andrew was a bit dishy wasn't he?

I'm still on the fence with everything but one thing I would like to point out that you briefly mentioned is that Nicola's dog is a Springer Spaniel and I grew up with 2 of them when I was younger and believe me when I say that they're an extremely loyal breed and also are gun dogs. If she did fall in, her dog would have definitely gone in after her, even if she was playing around. And Also, If it was a well-behaved dog then it wouldn't have gone far from its owner.
