What the holy hell is it about clowns that are so unnerving. I've always found it fascinating that people have phobias of clowns when they're a relatively recent, man-made concept as opposed to something that you can trace back to primitive response reactions, like snakes. I'm not personally bothered by them but I thought a little deep-dive might be just the ticket for our final Halloween pod since they're essentially associated with being creepy nowadays more than anything else.

Hope you had a fabulous Halloween darlings, we spent the evening at Hampton Court Palace on Saturday for the Halloween event, it was great looking around the rooms in the dark, and there were installations with lights, video and audio which added nice touches, both spooky and informative! Re: clowns, I don't find them scary at all, never have done, and I struggle to understand why people find them scary, aside from John Wayne Gacy... but I have done some clowning workshops with Kiki Lovechild, and Angela DeCastro (both theatre clowns, rather than circus clowns). It's all about playing, and being "in the moment", and embracing failure. When I did the workshops, I didn't develop a clown persona, it just helped me improve my performance as a cabaret act, helped me not worry and be self conscious about being silly. I think I'd like to do more of it, but never get around to doing it. Also, I should add that my fiancée does fancy Mooky the Clown from the Blackpool Tower Circus... https://artsfoundation.co.uk/directory/angela-de-castro/ http://www.fingerinthepie.com/meet-the-artist-kiki-lovechild/

My brother had a bit of a phobia around clowns growing up, but I never got it- I went to see IT twice at the cinemas, for some reason, and I was more bothered by the jumpscares than pennywise. Thank you for the educational pod, I feel much better informed on what the holy fuck a clown is now! Still not sure I understand the point, but hey ho, it's not the worst career in the world. I'll see you for the premier tonight!

You served up another great episode, doll but this got me thinking. Like you said, clowning is so rare nowadays and honestly very frowned upon - it is even regarded as being cringey. Clowns are just making fools out of themselves, and people don't associate with that at all now. You also brought up colors, or more like the lack thereof in today's world and clowns serve as a perfect antithesis to that. So, when did we get so dull? I wanna be a clown now.

The podcast was fabulush! I’m a latecomer to the Full Of It catalogue, so having the pleasure of listening to random episodes on my daily walk along the Chines! Heard you mention Castle Point - I’ve been there once and never again, heinous place. Have you been to Sovereign Shopping Centre? Jesus… talk about The Hills Have Eyes. At any rate I just moved here and don’t know a soul, so the pod has definitely made some lonely evenings a lot more bearable. Starting to think we lived the same childhood - just turned 32 and spent way too much time on MSN and Habbo as well as many painful years in the closet, except mine was the trans closet instead of the gay one (or was it both?). I also had an obsession with Ancient Egypt and took it upon myself to do a project when I was off school for a few months. I even made a hieroglyph(ics) dictionary, what a berk. One stark difference is I cannot even smell wine. Had a small glass when I was 16 just after I’d had my lip pierced, and it went straight in to my blood stream and someone had to call the paramedics, no one warned me! Sorry for the completely off-topic wall of text but keep up the good work, maybe see ya round town one day👋🏻 (although you did say you’d punch me in the face during the live stream last night hahaha, I promise me saying hello to Glenda was not the fan girl moment it’s being made out to be😂)

I already hit like just for the first 2 minutes alone 😩

First time listener long time caller… oh shit that’s not right… Hi lymp love the pod so much honestly can’t begin tell you how much I treasure this pod. I thought this specific topic would be great to comment on as I have a buzzard affinity for clowns. I have a lot of clown memorabilia l I simply can’t explain why but I bloody love it. That’s by the by I wanted to tell you the story of when I was 12 I had a boyfriend who had plans to join a circus and become a profession clown within that relationship he invited me to his house on a Saturday afternoon and of course I went over expecting us to watch a film or go for walk but he made he sit on a broken garden chair whilst he Fannyed about on a unicycle and fucked about with a Diablo for about two hours all while his dad played an out of tune ukulele right next to me… and he ended up breaking up with me it did wonders for my self esteem lol any way bye for now - L/Marina Bay

My auntie has a phobia of Buttons, which is bizarre. All her clothes have to be zip or popper closure and you have to watch what you wear around her 🤣

I hope this isn't cheating bogarting the comments for this episode for the presumptive topic of your next, but ahead of further comment on Hoax - are you girls submitting this to festivals? You'd have reach to a couple different niches - indie horror and general queer film festivals the big ones. I think the latter are hungry for something that isn't predictable or (and I hate this, coming from a racial minority when in Seattle) topically reaching for diversity metrics. For some reason both Seattle and Honolulu apparently have theirs in October but Outfest (LA) is in July? Idk what submissions are like across the board but I'd say Hoax is a shoe-in for a lot of cities' festivals in the US and across the Commonwealth (past and present).

Hey y’all!! I’m starting by saying I LOVED Hoax!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ I can’t really say I’m scared of a clown, it’s more like a clown with sharp teeth. ITS NOT NATURAL!!! Anyhow, I’m doing some research for my psychology degree I did dig up some instances where anything diverting away from the Puritan Christian worldview was seen as evil. especially with the forming of America in the 1600s, where even using bright colors was looked at as consorting with the devil. Any person, even someone who was meant to entertain kids, if they did any act that came close to magic, was of the dark arts and all were taught to fear them. There is a 3 book series by an author Mark Tufo that chronicles the life of Timothy, well the life and death of Timothy. He was a clown that was hired for children’s parties, who was bit by a child and became a zombie. The cool thing about this series of books is it was told from the perspective of Timothy, who was kind of a person within his own mind, when he was a zombie. It was a really good series of books, kind of gory, but it leads to the troupe of clowns being scary and especially a zombie clown with a little bit of human consciousness from a warped and twisted man.

Clowns are the weirdest things. I’ve never once been entertained by one, only creeped out by them. Even as a kid, everyone just seemed scared of them. If their job is to entertain or make people laugh, they don’t have a very good track record.

First time commenting but just finished the podcast. Love your channel and just became a Patreon a few weeks ago :) I never really had a fear of clowns personally but never thought of them much, but lately I've kinda developed a fetish for them cause of some TikTok clown 🫣 Anyway what I wanted to say is one thing that did scare me about clowns was an episode of Dexter's Lab where he got bit by a clowns denchers and he was slowly turning into a clown. Pretty scary stuff. Anyway I'm loving the podcast and the channel ❤️
