The Exorcist is a 1973 American good-girl-gone-batshit horror picture produced by a bunch of people that would've once been considered abhorrent heretics. Thankfully, people at large are less bothered by movies like this today and so we can all bask in it's vomit-filled glory as Linda Blair's head rotates 360 degrees while she stabs her hoohah with a crucifix. Once upon a time however, it was considered so shocking in the UK that it would take 28 years before being broadcast on TV.

I'm a horror wuss, but I don't mind The Exorcist, and to quote Beetlejuice, “I've Seen The Exorcist About 167 Times, And It Keeps Getting Funnier Every Single Time I See It!” I could bore you with why Tubular Bells is a good sinister piece of music, but instead why not check out the opening minute of this video, which is the original rejected theme music, after test audiences said it made them feel sick and uneasy (I think it's amazingly chaotic and spinechilling) https://youtu.be/5oAdXtYu9dk RE: figures, so true about you're only in competition with yourself. When I started my podcast I found myself getting annoyed that other Eurovision podcasts that also started during lockdown were bragging of hitting X Amount of listens and were well ahead of mine, but they had an unedited podcast with poor quality audio (basically Zoom audio) where I was recording locally, getting my co-host in Canada to record locally on her pc, and then I would use all my tricks to make it sound banging. But eventually I came to not care about it, and now I'm just satisfied that we have a core audience of about 50-60 regular listeners. And the only thing I ever aim for is to get 50 plays per main episode. Sorry for le essay

Hi, it's Otter again - just needed to write that the concept of exorcism being a pyschiatric condition reminded me of the time an ex-boyfriend of mine, who was a psychiatrist, told me of patients who thought they were possessed or under a spell and the psychiatrist job was to counter their delusions. While he was training and sitting in consultations with another psychiatrist, an old lady patient in the hospital came in with her tongue poking out. She told them that she was under the spell of a witch so the psychiatrist said 'oh ok, I know a counter-spell for that, I have just cast it and now you can put your tongue back in' and sure enough the old lady did lol Unfortunately the next day she came in with the tongue poking back out again saying the witch had cast the spell again. There was also the case of people thinking they had superpowers and they could destroy the psychiatrist with their minds so my ex would just say to them 'go on then, do it' leaving them looking like idiots. Lol

I’m waiting to October to watch The Babadook for the first time. I’m excited! Love this time of year as well. It’s beautiful in New England. (Also New Englanders really know how to do Halloween decorations.)

You’re right in that a lot of the controversy surrounding this film, was from a religious stand point. William Friedkin, the director, has said that Regan’s story is all a side plot to a film about Father Karras having a crisis of faith. I first saw The Exorcist when I was 8 and it traumatised me. My sister was 13 and babysitting me and hired a bunch of horror movies to impress her friends at a sleepover, unaware she was about to ruin my life. Being a little girl, I genuinely thought I was going to be possessed and that it was a regular thing that happened. It didn’t help that Days of Our Lives also had a storyline running around the same time of Marlena being possessed, so I really thought I was up shit creek. I wasn’t able to watch it again until I was 25. Even hearing the name of it or seeing a movie poster would make my heart race and my stomach drop, I was so scared of it. Now it’s one of my favourite horror films and I see it now for what a masterpiece it is. Thanks for another gorgeous pod 😈

With the child actors thing, I recently read Janette McCurdy’s book (I’m Glad My Mom Died) and the majority is about her life as a child actor and it’s really eye opening. I gather that not all parents of child actors are gone be that bad, and some children probably enjoy acting more but it’s crazy how far some people will push their kids for the lime light!

The exorcist is in a category of films that I find genuinely quite (stressful) horrifying. The whole corruption of Reagen's innocence, that horrible man's voice that comes out of her, the fact her mum is literally in one of the most privileged places in society and no amount of money or influence can save her. In regards to you mentioning the age ratings and eventual home release.. have you heard of that relatively new film 'censor'? British horror film set in the 80s during the video nasty era. The main character works for the agency that decides film ratings, and when reviewing a particularly over the top/exploitative horror film, realises the main actress is her sister who went missing when she was a child...and sets out to find out who made the film. I don't think it's a film for everyone but it has an infamous ending and is certainly a film that makes you think

There was a sequel TV series to The Exorcist a few years back that might interest you. It was one of those shows that did well critically but never really got an audience so ended after 2 seasons. Plus, one of the priests in it was bisexual and the show runner told homophobes to fuck off after they complained that he kissed another man. As if American Horror Story hasn't proved TV horror shows are the gayest things ever! On the topic of the original, I do always love that of all the reactions to the original being so shocking, the Catholic Church apparently loved it for its representation of faith saving the day and the priests being the hero. Wild!

Hello my lovely. Looking forward to this Halloween series. Not the biggest fan of Halloween (I know, sorry) but the Novympia spooky treats have to be my favourite part of the season! Shamelessly namedropping that I’m working with Jessica Lange at the moment. Because of you, I keep quoting “there’s not going to be a swimming pool you stupid slut”. It’s become a thing where I can’t even look at the woman without saying it. I hope you’re happy ;)

The Exorcist is actually the film that made my hairdresser quit horror movies about the paranormal for good! Apparently she saw it in theaters and said “No more of that demon-y shit for me!”. About the theatrical release, what are your thoughts on the different the versions of the film? Have you seen both? Speaking of horror season though: after actually seeing it, I cannot recommend “Barbarian” enough. I’d LOVE to hear your thoughts on it, especially the ending~!

Hello first time leaving comment. I am 19 years of age and just wanted to say you guys have acted as my comfort blanket for many a year now. Recently been scared shitless with important decisions being sprung upon me regarding moving out and apprenticeships. I really am terrified as the shy little homebody that I am, but I know the pod and the chanelle are always there for me to go to for a breather, you never fail to make me laugh and bring me some comfort. Lots of love to both of you gems. X
