Showgirls is a 1995 American erotic drama film starring Elizabeth Berkley's labia. It is to date, the only NC-17 movie given a wide release (ahem) in the USA. United Artists sent an army of security out to theatres to make sure minors wouldn't sneak in to see it. Berkley stars as Nomi Malone, a sex worker turned exotic dancer who climbs the Vegas hierarchy to become a glittery headliner in a bizarre, galactic titty parade.

It is often cited as one of the worst films ever made and Nova and I continue to be utterly fascinated with how peculiar it is.

Contains obvious sexual commentary and references to SA.

Exquisite pod as always doll. Sorry to throw in a comment unrelated to the topic but a few pods back you mentioned you had a part to play with drag race Vs the world, now its pretty much over are you allowed to say what you did? My guess is you helped blu prepare for snatch game as she mentioned you in her drag race year book.

novympia

What is her drag race year book?? 😂 yes, you are correct.

I actually moved to Las Vegas because of this movie. This movie has always been a favourite of mine. I believe the movie you were thinking Showgirls was compared to is All About Eve. Another great movie you should look into if you haven't seen.

Great pod as always. I will now be adding showgirls to my next film night movie list as it's not a film I've watched for about 10years. Also re cult classics one of my favorites is heathers I don't know if it would make a good pod or not or maybe a pod about Winona Ryder.

Long time listener, a first-time commenter here! I enjoyed the Showgirls and Clue pods on cult films thoroughly! With the mention of additional it ult films to cover, there is a sequel to Rocky Horror called Shock Treatment. Shock Treatment is true caviar in a little black dress of a cult film. Anything early-John Waters and Devine can be defined as the filthiest films alive! (Pink Flamingos, Female Troubles; and the Divine documentary is excellent to highlight various trivia on the making of the movie.) Also, the unsung sequel to Grease, Grease 2, has catchy bops and nuns bowling for Christ.

It’s really awful that I was like 8 when I first watched this on HBO at like midnight. I about PISSED when I seen the Saved By The Bell reunion and that bit where Zac said She became a stripper and she was SCONE FACED!😂😂😂 I feel like there was an opportunity to make a film realistically depicting how the Las Vegas show business is monstrous for women instead of making it hetero-horny and uncomfortable. To kinds of piggy back off the last commenter, I would absolutely love to see you do a pod about Divine and John Waters because listening to your thought and opinions have become my favorite pastime. Thanks for the many months of your cool menthol voice 😂❤️

I haven't listened to a pod for so, so long. I missed them! Was laughing along with you at the ridiculousness of this movie, even though I've never seen it... and not convinced I ever should 😂 Time to go back and listen to a few older pods and catch up x

I’m so excited! I’m so excited! I’m so…. Scared :( Loved the pod gal. Didn’t listen to last weeks in time to comment which is so annoying as clue is truly in my top three favourite films. Such a banger. (So let’s talk about it now) Personally I think a remake would be interesting but only if they didn’t try to pack it with hot young things as that is not what clue is. I don’t need Ryan Reynolds or people like zendaya in this film because it just wouldn’t work. I can’t come up with a full cast but my suggestion is that peacock could work with Meryl Streep. She is a surprisingly funny lady and I think she could really camp it up. She is often very serious but I think if she’s given a role she can really chew on then she could run with it. I’ve never watched The normal version of Showgirls but I have watched MovieBitches review it and reference both the original and the commentary provided by David Shmader (which is the version I have watched) which is truly so funny and worth the watch. Also I approve of the cult movies theme atm, and I second the fact that you should watch murder by death. Make it a great week x

God Showgirls is one of my absolute favourite movies. There's such a charm in a dumpster fire of a movie in which everyone involved is committed to the belief that they've made some piece of profound art! We once watched it at a baby shower we threw for a friend ( as you do ) and all of us started flopping around in our seats in the pool sex scene! There's a video on YouTube where someone dubbed that scene with metal music which is SO FUNNY! On the topic of endearing dumpster movies, I have to recommend Sleepaway Camp. It's an 80s slasher with some of the most bizarre choices made, and yet it's lightning in a bottle. I put it on whenever I'm down (or whenever I'm getting drunk with new friends as a sort of initiation.) Go into blind with a bottle of wine and you and Nova will have a wild time!
