A couple of years ago we visited Beijing. We stayed in an area that had been built up for an anticipated population growth, but the growth hadn't happened yet. So it was like a ghost town, that hadn't been lived in. There was a massive mall that had open shops with few staff and no patrons, a huge hotel with only 5 guests, a cafe that we were the only guests all day.
