The crimson demon academy is way more strict than a place like this, you only graduate once you're advance-ranked in at least four subjects." She puffs her chest. "And I'm a genius, so I reached that level really quickly." You definitely fall on the young prodigy archetype.

Darkness tilts her head. "Because if that's not the case... Why do you refuse to use any non-explosion magic? I don't get it." Wait, you're telling me she literally only uses one type of magic!? What is she!? A Pokémon with only one move slot!?

The principal, who's sweating for some reason, slowly raises a trembling hand. "Actually...!" But before he can continue, he is interrupted by the sound of opening doors.

To my surprise Ariel enters the room, followed by her bodyguards, she is stomping the floor and shouting. "Principal you cannot execute him! It's not his fault that cowardly demon acted like a cowardly demon!" E-execution!?

Fitz, who is following the princess quickly nods. "Yes! It is not his fault that he is that way, he can be fixed!" I'm not broken in the first place! "The fault lies with..." She points at Eris and Nina. "Them...!" It really doesn't!

Still, now Luke and Fitz are both gasping at her direction and slowly turning to Megumin, it seems they realized they are in the presence of legends. I can only hope that their expectations were low indeed...

And it seems my expectations for Darkness were too high, for she continues. "But my actual name is Lalatina Dustiness Ford, a very high ranking noble who..." She puts her hands on her face. "Who...! Who got addicted to co-" Thankfully she is interrupted by a mad Eris.

However, I'm interrupted by Ariel, who has escaped thinking land. "Yes, concerning those punishments..." For some reason I'm scared of what you're about to say. "I think the academy should admit fault here." Hah?

She continues. "I won't hide that I didn't know the identity of Lady Darkness and Lady Megumin until now, but it's clear that they are people of high pedigree who would not cause trouble. Lord Subaru is an old friend of Silent Seven Stars too, so he is also of high pedigree." No, I'm not! And I definitely wasn't friends with Ugly Gobbo! I was like a Gobbo Slayer back then!

Also, I can't help to notice that you didn't mention Eris and Nina at all in your little defense. In fact, even if you aren't glaring at Eris I can feel the animosity in the air... To think you would be so mad that even as a princess you can't hide it!

It honestly surprises me, because as our previous interaction has show, Ariel is actually a good, kind girl... I guess she is technically in love with me, so she might be feeling threatened by Eris. However my surprise has now shifted towards the fact that she's just ignoring Darkness' sex slave confession.

Ariel must be such a pure little angel that her mind wiped out that memory. She did become strangely silent once that came up after all. Nanahoshi crosses her arms. "As I was saying, I'm here to stop this ludicrous treatment." She clenches her fists. "I was in the middle of a project with a colleague of mine..." I'm assuing that's Rudeus. "And then a bunch of girl came knocking in, telling my b-b-boyfriend was in trouble." How was that rumor even born!?

Forget that, how was that rumor spread so fast!? How did Nanahoshi received news about my situation so fast!? Man, schools are scary, this is part of why I became a NEET you know?

I don't trust any young person around Rudeus though, so my alarm systems are at full potential! Let's ignore that I'm the guy who made that young girl into his soulmate in the first place. Please and thank you.

The principal fakes a cough. "Actually..." And then he looks around, as if expecting another interruption, however that doesn't happen. "I don't plan on executing anyone today. Not that I even could." I breathe a sigh of relief.

He continues. "I may be King-Ranked in Wind Magic, but I seek no quarrel with a man who made Badigadi run for the hills... In fact I actually have an offer for both Mister Subaru and Miss Megumin." For real!?

I didn't do anything to that Badigadi guy though, he is the one who acted all weird. I guess I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth though, not if I like living at least. It seems for now I'll will run with this lie.

Megumin interjects. "If it's free I'll accept literally anything." At least listen to what he has to say first! Specially since you were calling this academy pathetic just a second ago!

The principal nods. "It will be indeed free... What I offer in this school is a position. A position as a special student." A bunch of people gasp, that list doesn't include me though, since I have no idea what that means.

He raises a finger. "There are many advantages to being a special student, such as free tuition, a paid dorm room, and even the ability to only go to class once a month." All my NEET instincts are telling me this is too good.

He continues. "In essence however, you two will act more as researchers than students. The academy will do your best so that you may produce interesting results." He motions to Nanahoshi. "Miss Silent Seven Stars here is an example of a special student for example." Ah, so that's how she gets away with the NEET life...

The principal smiles. "Because special students are essentially advertisement... Having a legendary adventurer and a man who made Badigadi run is sure to sound good." Wow, you're not even hiding how bad this sounds.

But my questions still aren't over. "Well, that sounds reasonable and all, but what about the fact that Megumin and I would not be starting from the beginning of the year...?" Also, I don't even know how to read!

The principal waves me off. "It's fine. This is not exactly uncommon for special students. It was the same with Mister Rudeus over there, and one of them special students hasn't even arrived yet. Like I said, think of this as less of becoming a student, and more as becoming a sponsored researcher." I don't know anything though! I definitely need to be a student!

I look down. "I..." Besides, do I even want to go back to school? I quit for a reason... Why am I equating this to a school from back in Earth? Surely this will be different... But I don't even know how to read...!

Suddenly both of my legs are kicked at the same time. "Take this opportunity already." Those voices in synch come from Nanahoshi and my girlfriend. Great now I'm being pressured from all sides...

I sigh. "I would like to get more details about this later, but sure, I'll join." Hopefully Nanahoshi knows what she's doing or I'm finished. At least this place lets me skip class most of the days.

The principal smiles. "Great! Then you two are free to start your classes any day of the month!" I need to speedrun learning how to read!

Megumin interject. "By the way, can I go get my cat...?" Ah! I completely forgot about Chomusuke...!

I also forgot about Aqua and Kazuma... Today is a mess.
