Another animation process post today while I wrap up this extended song.
Stratacut animation is one of the most mind-boggling forms of animation I've ever come across.
The process is similar to sushi art and those tiny erasers that always looked a little off.

See how they're made by taking long rolls of each shape/color and creating a long tube that slices individual images? Now imagine bending and manipulating each element while creating that tube to plan out an animation. That's Strata-cut, and my tests above hold no candle to the work that exists using this method.

Here's a picture during the making of the clip shown in the video above (used in "Now and Then") The shapes that make up this particular one are comprised of cones that become dilating circles and long spaghetti-like strips that travel around as dots!

Home for the holidays, I used a stop motion app on my phone to photograph the animated sausage. Each slice was delicately removed as the sushi rod was inched closer to the camera.

I'm gathering some more behind the scenes from that video to share on here soon along with some music experiments I've been working on.

Wheels are turning and very neat things are in motion.
Much to come!

This kinda made me hungry.

Almost hypnotizing huh?

I can’t read the whole thing right now because I’m currently in my music theory class but thank you for sharing! I know it’s great!! 🧡🧡🧡

I've been enjoying these experiments! Keep up the great work and remember to smile! : )

Whoa! The way it moved reminded me of the moment the guy opened himself up in "Now and Then"! That's really awesome, Jack!! 💙

This looks super complex

The Mammoth

dope asf. how do you manipulate what's going on in side the sausage before hand though

Anonymous

Incredible work, Jack! Is that a shirt with your own art on it?

Anonymous

Very well done jack! I hope these new styles of art you're experimenting with can all integrate and form together to send you even further into creative legend!

Cool new textures to work with! Ever seen Bruce Bickfords claymation? Kinda reminds me of that feel. RIP Bruce.

Are you going to be doing more with this technique? It's fun to play around with concepts in your head but it implementing it sounds so hefty, how long did like one little sausage take you to make and cut and whatnot?

jackstauber

It's all about planning the motion, then laying down strips of clay on top of each other in particular paths/distortions. (ex: a cone pointed towards the camera will be sliced from its top revealing a small circle, then continue to expand as the clay is sliced.) It's much better explained with visuals, I recommend giving it a search! It's a very odd process.

Grew up watching Bruce Bickford. Personal favorite. Alongside his clay work his 2D line animations are some of the most hypnotizing cartoons I've ever seen.

This type of animating definitely needs an afternoon set aside. I feel like it was equal lengths of time setting up and cutting, but would have taken much longer setting up had it been a more complicated animation. Still can't believe a lot of the work that exists using this method.

i admire your dedication to animation and to always try something out of the box, just wanna let you know you’re a huge inspiration for me as a creator, stoked to see what you pull off next

This is awesome animation, it looks so mesmerizing.

Love David Daniels work. Sculpting in the 4th dimension! Can't wait to see more of it in your style. It looks like such a daunting process. I haven't tried it yet.

I've seen a few people who make these clips and put them in reverse to make it look like the clay figure is being pressed out through a tube, like flowing water. That would be a cool idea to incorporate into some of your videos, I think.

Anonymous

Like one of those oddly satisfying videos

Anonymous

that looks like so much effort that my tiny brain can't even comprehend it, pretty groovy though!

Anonymous

Is this how you made that scene in Now and Then? So cool!
