"MATZ" is the term HJ and Seonghwa have come up with to refer to their duo. Basically it's a shortened version of "mat-hyung" meaning the eldest of the group so they added a Z at the end to make it plural. But what's actually quite clever about it is that it also contains ATEEZ (M-ATZ aka A to Z.) It's cute. Lore wise, I think there's two main readings of the MV that are happening simultaneously. The more obvious one is that, as you pointed out, it's kind of a diss track aimed at their haters that say they make "noise music" and at their stalkers who film their private moments and have put a GPS on their car (a kia carnival i think?) in the past. The lore interpretation is, i think, a continuation of the general theme of surveillance that's been established throughout the whole World era. The chains that hold them down also have clocks on them which is an interesting detail that probably has implications as far as their ability to use the Cromer to travel between dimensions (that hourglass that keeps popping up in their MVs.) But we're not sure yet. Fingers crossed for a IT's You dance practice! 🤞🏻 the MV certainly has quite a bit of choreo so it'd be great to see it in full before they go on tour later this month and perform it there.
