I struggled for a long time to understand the different ways that Blender Cycles allows you to control what/how things show up in renders. It's still tricky to understand as there are so many different combinations of visibility settings! But it's important and has been really helpful for me to dig in and try to understand it all, especially for combining CGI with real footage. Hopefully this guide is helpful and if you have any feedback/corrections/changes please let me know!
