We had a rough start (with customs confiscating my first RG552), but the new unit is in and things are moving again!

For starters, we now have Treble support, Android 8.1 (versus 7.1.2), built-in root (via Magisk), a built-in TWRP recovery, the option to install Google Apps and access to a variety of new cool stuff thanks to that!

How to install: Unpack the attached files using 7zip and follow the included instructions found inside README.txt.

For those needing the Google Play Store: Reboot into TWRP and install the latest OpenGapps ARM64 8.1 Pico bundle! (I suggest you finish the first-time setup with WiFi disabled... things move so much faster if you do!)

For those needing root: Magisk is included out of box and only needs to be activated on first boot. A WiFi connection is required for the initial Magisk activation.

Changelog

  • Initial build (based on Android 8.1)

Fixable known issues

  • For some odd reason Android picks up a modem in this device?
Kind of useless without a SIM-card slot to go with it...

I tried three versions of the ppsspp emulator, they all hang when I try to enter the settings. Have you run into such a problem?

blackseraph

No I haven't tried PPSSPP yet, but I'll take a look today after work. Edit: I can confirm the issue. I just grabbed my unit real quick and it acts the same for me. Edit 2: I took a closer look and it really just sits there waiting on something. I'm not entirely sure what though... I'll need to look into the PPSSPP source code to see if I can find a clue. I'll keep you posted.

My Problem is, that if i press the Volume +, Function Button and Power Button the RG552 doesnt vibrate. It takes me to the Bootloader. Can i install the Image also from the SD-Card?

blackseraph

Odd that your unit doesn't vibrate but you are exactly where you need to be... So I suggest move on and act like it vibrated. There's currently no MicroSD card install method.

Anonymous

My doesn't vibrate too. Windows not recognizing it like MaskRom, only like rockchip device and installation through install.bat not started. But on Ubuntu all works like a charm )

Mine didn’t vibrate either. I held the power button until the fan turned on and then kept holding down vol up and f for a second or two. The device didn’t show anything on screen, but my PC recognized it. Note: I had to install the rockchip driver located in the folder called driver (I think, I’m not at my computer) for it to work. Before installing the driver my PC wouldn’t recognize the device and the install.bat would fail

It is 2 different firmware?

This is fantastic! So glad to hear that development on this device in moving again. I'll be flashing this ASAP.

blackseraph

No. They are exactly the same. The MaskROM version is for first time installers and people who want to upgrade via a PC, while the TWRP version is for on-device upgrades via the built-in TWRP recovery. Most people will want the MaskROM bundle though, so if you are unsure, go for that one!

blackseraph

Windows users need to install the included drivers. Linux comes with the drivers pre-installed (but not all Linux distributions have the required udev rules, which is why I included a working udev rule in the README). The udev rule issue can also be circumvented by running as root (if users don't feel comfortable editing the udev rules as shown in the README).

way to go Seraph! Kudos to dreamesper.com for helping out too! Cleanrom lives on!!!!!

Last Question: How can i see open Tasks/ Apps? I can figure out how to let pop up the Tasks, back and home buttons on screen...

blackseraph

Pie controls are my suggested way at the moment. In the long run I might add an option to double/triple map the F button. Maybe something like short press is back, double-press is home and long press is recent apps?

Anonymous

will there be a fix for L2/R2 controls to work like LT/RT in apps like xcloud?

Anonymous

This, however work around has been to use xcloud from chrome app and works perfectly

you recommend balena etcher or something else to flash the image ?
