For months I've been in pre-production for a video similar to the Spotify or Behringer vids, but regarding gender in the music production world. Weirdly, some of the things I initially focused on, such as the name "Gearslutz" potentially being a welcome mat for unwelcoming behavior, are actually now in the process of being tackled and changed.

Another time-eater has been interviews. The fact is that I don't know wtf I'm talking about on this subject because I haven't experienced any form of it. So what better thing to do during a pandemic than have a bunch of email discussions and Zoom calls with female producers ranging from music students who have yet to grasp DAWs all the way to Imogen Heap.

Now I'm onto my favorite part. The actual science. I've been gifted/cursed (depending on how tired I am) with a library of research in addition to my own polls and surveys. I also have a cognitive neurologist helping explain how male and female brains/neural hormonal interactions differ, and if that could possibly have anything to do with the disparity of females vs. males in music production. In addition to this, plenty of more interviews with folks across the spectrum who have researched this for decades.

Now it's wrap-up time, because I feel like I'm getting lost in a rabbit hole that will simply stray away from or delay making a YouTube video that can deliver unbiased information on this topic. So if you don't see a review video next week, it's because the grind is focused on this one.

Finally: This video, in its current form, would ABSOLUTELY NOT be possible without this Patreon. Research papers, academic books, and consultants are expensive, and there's no way I'd be able to approach a topic this sensitive with this much confidence or rigor without your help. This is literally your money at work. Thank you!

Appreciate the update! I'm really looking forward to seeing the eventual video with the hope of learning/listening/considering. Thanks for working on this, Benn. 💛

Super excited to see this! I've always found the music scene to be so male dominated and would love ideas around what I can do personally to make it more balanced.

I Really appreciate work your doing now ... just doubled my patreon support to you. Hooray for research, fair reporting and good heart! Please dont stop.

Hey Benn, I want to make sure you've interviewed Laura Escude for this. She's an artist and tech educator and also has run backline and show designs for a lot of tours. She's also on advisory boards for a bunch of women focused music organizations.

Women's Audio Mission also deserves a lot of kudos for the work they've been doing in this realm. As a woman I'm a little dubious of how much my hormones have to do with it, but there's a lot of scholarship on stereotype and social identity threat and how that hurts performance and learning of discriminated groups due to psychological duress. In any case, excited to hear what you've found in your journey! It's still an under covered topic and it's great to see it get more air time.

I’m really interested to learn more about this.

No spoilers, but I'm not very convinced of theories citing hormone's involvement. 🙂 But if it's not explored, then it might exist as a perceived valid argument rather than a devil's advocate to some viewers. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I'm familiar with WAM, they're excellent. I think I've probably reached out to just about every NPO in this realm and had some good discussions. Most of them aren't very willing to share data without branding the video for their organization, which is understandable, but also a bit too far off course.

You interview bad snacks?

I've talked to her a lot about this video but she's currently out of town for a formal interview for it this next week. It's an open invitation though if she can make time for it before I start editing.

I suspect imposter syndrome plays a big part, too. There's that aspect of people where it seems like men just go do a thing, qualified or not, but women seem to think we need to check all the boxes first before we can even start a thing. This is my experience looking for different software jobs as well as with music production. I have to constantly remind myself that not checking every box on the job description, or not knowing every aspect of a daw, is not a good reason to avoid applying or jumping in. I don't necessarily think that's biological, though, I suspect it's more of a...Socialization? That's the wrong word, but whatever, it's too late for words :P

You had me at Imogen. She's my main inspiration for attempting to music. I'm not there yet, but it's a goal of mine... Some day.

So the aim of the piece is to, what...prove that sexism is the cause for the disparity in the male/female ratios in music production and not based on the fact that, on average, males are far more interested in things than females just as, on average, females are more interested in people? Well, i do hope gender quotas do not figure into your thinking on the topic so I am very curious to see what you come up with.

Unless something major happens to change course: I think anyone that will watch this video for the sole intention of it acting as an echo chamber for whatever convenient position they've chosen on this (unfortunately highly controversial) topic will be disappointed. The vast majority of "science" and "fact" that people are abstractly referencing to me on Twitter can be contradicted with hard data that I have in a ecologically irresponsible stack of paper piled up next to me. I hope most of my viewers trust that I don't really care about validating my own preconceptions or becoming biased for my own comfort. I just simply want to know, and in turn want my viewers to know why the ratio of sex in music production is so surprisingly ill-proportioned. The answer may not be a convenient truth, and the solution may be more complicated than we'd like to think. Just please understand that this isn't politically motivated.

Just learning about that gearslutz change.org petition now. Nice, looks like I can't sign it now because it has been successful. Great to hear, I always thought that name sucked. I am noticing more women producers on youtube vids etc than say 5 years ago, which is great, but of course there is a long history of women in the field like Delia Derbyshire, Suzanne Ciani etc. Looking forward to the video.

I'm always quite interested in the effect of the balance : 'peer group support vs pressure' on a persons belief in what is possible for them, and in turn how this interacts with their self-direction ie internal vs external validation focus - I've always presumed that women were more peer group pressure and external validation susceptible than men - hence their 'exception only' presence in any artistic field which pretty much requires high levels of internal validation but I'd love to see what you come up with.

I wanted to share one thing that you probably already know about but that I think is one of the biggest steps in science, particularly information sharing in the science world, it's called sci-hub and Its the effort of one genius woman,a physicist and neurologist, that just got fed up with the way science publishing scams basically everyone. There is a good video on the topic by medlifecrisis m.youtube.com/watch?v=PriwCi6SzLo As I said you probably know this already but If not I think It's worth bothering you to spread awareness. Cheers, keep the great content up, you're doing a ton of great work with your videos, and I can't wait to see this one.
