So, spoiler: My next YouTube feature will likely be about iPad audio production (something I've always had a lot of...frustration with).

I definitely want to explain some of the hardware compatibility woes, but I want to do a comb over of the most interesting, unique, or vital apps.

Is there anything that you are curious about or recommend?  I have a LOT of them already, but there is always a gem I'm missing.

iPads being as expensive as they are, do you think you would review android options at some point as well?

Anonymous

Hmm, there's a metric boatload of apps as you said and then huge different workflows (AUM vs Beatmaker vs Cubasis vs Korg Gadet ...) for 'unique' my totally unqualified vote would be Borderlands, Samplr, Sector ...

Audiokit stuffs, Patterning (Damned essential imb),...maybe you could Speak about why Reason studios doesn't make Compact the powerhouse workflow-wise that it could be 🤔 and...whachameverelse you can bring to the table. OT (kinda) but i would love a vid on advice/how-to make a small idea-rig (or performance) mobile for use in areas without mains power accessible. Discuss needed cables, powerpacks, etc... if you even know. By the way, I'm talking actual gear, not ipad stuff. Thx for considerationing 🤘 rock it

Nanostudio 2 and Koala Sampler are the only systems I think I ever really ... ended up getting anything out of, so if neither of them were on your list I think both are worth checking out. Also, all of humbletune's apps (http://www.humbletune.com/) are IMO fantastic. They remind me of the OP-1's built-in engines almost. Not sure if I have specific questions on it though, I've tried to make it work enough that I'm no longer trying to make that work at all, lol. Though I miss all of the humbletune apps on Windows/Mac ... there are things that can replace them but the UI is just so nice there.

The part I have struggled with the most is having that one port for all your i/o. Curious if you have found any workable solution to that.

Seems like the only viable Android option is Caustic 3.

*unsub* ... "I hear there's this new app called Flip, and it's super neat ..~!"

miRack is an interesting take on the iPad music making experience. Not sure if it can act standalone, or if it will play nice with anything else, but I'm curious.

I don't know if something like this should be included in the video, but I would love to hear your thoughts on customizable midi controller apps like Lemur! I used to build Lemur templates all the time to speed up my workflow, but I ended up spending more time updating my templates than actually writing music! Maybe there is a faster way now...

Hardware compatibility: Issues with Windows interoperability, like why is MIDI out over USB seemingly impossible. And why are there so many utility apps like midimittr, Midiflow, Link to MIDI etc. just to set up basic routing. So many of them are no longer maintained. Vital apps: ChordPolyPad, Moog Model D, Animoog, iM1, TAL-U-NO-LX, Arturia iSem, Neo-Soul Keys TouchOSC & MIDI Designer for controlling hardware, including pedals.

I'm mostly interested in the general workflow of integrating the iPad with a traditional DAW. There are so many neat iPad apps that make cool sounds, but actually getting those sounds into my DAW in a *seamless* way has always proven to be the main challenge for me.

A pretty useful and cheap tracker/sequencer/sampler is Nanoloop. The iOs and Android versions are very different to the GameBoy hardware versions. You can sample, make FM, chain patterns together. Patterns have a maximum length of 16 clicks (it's biggest limitation in my use, although you can chain 4 together to just loop infinitely). One of the more useful features is each loop can be any number of steps. So you can get your Proggo 7/13 patterns rolling with ease.

They stopped updating Lemur, which is such a bummer as I had a whole playground full of stuff!

On the expensive side side but something outstanding for the niche of classical and score composers is Staffpad. The workflow and good results with its own library and the expansions its really amazing.

Also to consider is the upcoming developments of Audiomodeling with the SWAM Instruments. The are soooo expresive and for me outstanding in terms of physical modeling... and the upcoming port to iOS are so amazing and next level for the platform. Still in beta but i would def contact them to ask about them and test them. In terms of hardware compatibility i rely heavily on my Iconnect Audio 4+; it makes everything easier if you understand it well enough (the matrix for audio and midi routing, i mean)

I was considering getting an iPad mini because of Garage Band for sketches and the new ableton-like Logic control app. Curious to see some quality review and thoughts on this.

Flip Sampler by Andrew Huang seems to be pretty complete for simpler sample based music production on the go. I've been on the fence about getting it as I don't find the workflow using an iPhone/iPad all that inviting, but would certainly like to have more opinions. I do have a few Korg ones (gadget, iM1, iWavestation) but I rarely use them. GarageBand, bring free, apart from the device cost itself, is a good option to start with as well.

Be interested in your take on the granular stuff (Borderlands/Tardigrade/Quanta etc.). The change over to USB C on the newer iPads has made a big difference to how easy I've found mine to use - I can now just plug in an audio interface with one cable to this ipad and it works - I tend to use it as an effect on the sends of my mixer.

Anonymous

It's a port of the open source VCV Rack. There was some controversy over some instrument assets used.

Hey Benn, I agree that the iPad is a frustrating device for music - so much great stuff around but it always seems like a lot of hassle to keep things stable enough to integrate To wider setup. I tend to use Ableton Link for sync but it’s not perfect.I don’t know if you’ve tried Icegear’s apps but they make some really cool ‘spiky’ synths, Lagrange, Kroeneker and Redshrike are great sounding and super cheap - they do a nice step sequencer / multi tap delay too.

Anonymous

Don't know if reason compact it's on that list 😀

Hi, maybe you could take a look at the "Fugue Machine" Sequencer, here is Jay Hosking's hardware jam as an example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9PP1QxpdFo

Korg Gadget is my fave and the one music making app I use all the time. The new MixBox by IK is great, especially as an AU plug-in in Cubasis

FL studio mobile - you are probably already familiar with it. I love it for jotting down ideas without distractions. It’s incredibly limited compared to FL studio which IMO isn’t a big deal because it forces me to stay on task. The big issue is when it comes to bringing it over to FL - it doesn’t translate into a regular project file. You have to treat it like a VST inside your project.

IDAM if you're on a Mac works well for me. AUM to record stems then export them is my other standby.

bennjordan

Really? I'm experiencing the opposite with my iPad Pro 2020. I've got a pile of interfaces (some FOR iPad) that simply won't detect. It's been an expensive headache that has pretty much pushed this video back a few months. 🤔

bennjordan

So you can't just export a project to FL Studio? 🤔 I always assumed you could and never really went to town with FL mobile due to the lack of plugin support.

Anonymous

Interesting - I've got a Presonus Audiobox i2 and a Focusrite Scarlet 2nd Gen 2i6 that work fine - just use a USB C to USB B cable though I only use them with AUM to do FX and some looping - I basically use my ipad as a fancy FX pedal - mines a 2020 Pro too. I have to plug out and in again if I plug the interface in while it's locked, but other than that, it's been Ok.

Isomorphic Controllers. I'm searching for a new portable, isomorphic MIDI keyboard for controlling VSTs in a DAW and I'm wondering if you get used to the lack of haptic feedback when using virtual controllers on tablets.

Anonymous

Correct. It’s not a compatible format. You can play it back inside of fl studio but it’s like its own instrument.

I just saw the episode Benn, regarding midi and audio input, I just got the iRig Pro Duo and it works perfectly with my 11 inch iPad Pro over both USB C and A, although over A I need to use the official camera dongle, but iRig include USB A, and lightening cables in the box. The only reason to use USB A with the official dongle for me is so I can charge the iPad while using the Duo, but if my session is short the duo runs off the iPad fine, plus you can put in batteries if you need phantom power for mics (I have not testing using mics with it yet, just line in from synth). I realise this does not solve the larger issue you highlight about apple being dicks regarding support for devices, but wanted to let you know in case it helped.
