Ol' Yellow Eyes

The thing they are dumping is likely supposed to be hot oil or pitch (a plant resin kinda like sap). We can't know for sure but it's unlikely big pots of hot oil or pitch would have been dumped like that because of the cost and difficulty of handling something like that back then. During a siege those being attacked would often drop or throw whatever they could on their attackers but such large amounts of oil out of pots is kind of a fantasy thing. Someone dumping the hot grease from breakfast over the wall though? I think we have records of things like that. The show is pretty good with historical accuracy from what I know, they just embellish a little. Actually it's the same with the boat carrying. It was something that we have a record of but they didn't carry them and run with them, they likely rolled them along logs they cut down. Pretty cool that Askeladd's idea was a real tactic that got used though.

When Askelad betrayed Thors in the duel he claimed it on his father Olaf's name, But when he claims his ancestor Artorius he doesn't brake his promise. I'm not gonna explain why because spoilers

Yellow eyes is right, probably supposed to be oil. Also wow this is your first Viking show ever? Most of them are about as, or even more brutal. Kinda cool

The liquid dropped onto the fort's attackers was boilng tar. It's sticky, hot and flamable. Basically the medieval equivalent of napalm.

You're catching onto some things that will be revealed. Might not be as obvious because this show doesn't explain or hold your hand you have to catch it, but with your cinematic eye I think you will get it when it happens.

Fun fact: this episode of the anime is chapter 1 of the manga. One of the changes the anime made when adapting the manga was to present the story in chronological order

What they dropped on them was boiling oil. It was common to drop boiling water on sieging armies,. Oil was used too but much rarer because of how expensive oil was back then, but when you are being invaded and the oil will be looted anyways, may as well use it too.

Yes Alan uses different names for promises. Good catch!

James S

Pay attention to Askeladd/Alan's promises and what he swears by when he makes those promises. Because there are certain things he swears by when he intends to keep a promise, and other ones he swears when he doesn't intend to keep those promises...

Can confirm this patreon user. Highest chance it was oil. Why oil and not water? lower speed time of cooling it down, also more sticky. Pitch is much worse due to sticky effect.

Vikings ship were well made and done in such way that they would also allow travel on rivers where nomal ships wouldnt be able to pass because the water wouldnt be deep enough

Aedremor

The stuff dumped on the shield is most likely hot sand.

Vlad the Third

And coming the advantage and surprise of being able to row their main battle barges upriver stream which most civilisations that time didn't expect
