Since Fifth Element tied, we flipped a coin and it landed on Martian. However we've incorporated Fifth Element into our schedule and will be available in a couple of weeks.

NASA always builds a copy of a rover because they test the design on Earth before they launch the other into space, but this means they can always use the copy to test and troubleshoot any problems that they run into.

There were two rovers that landed on Mars in 2004, one called Spirit and the other called Opportunity. They were only scheduled to last from 90 days, Spirit lasted until March 2010 and Opportunity lasted until June 2018. In 2012 NASA landed another rover on Mars called Curiosity which is still working. After a year on Mars it audibly played Happy Birthday, which was the first time a song had been played on another planet and the first time music had been transmitted between two planets.

To answer a few of the questions: - Dust storms do happen on mars and they can get quite large even covering the entire surface of the planet, however due to the thin atmosphere on mars the wind does not have much power behind it so the storm as seen in the film is impossible. - Martian soil can grow plants with some fertilizer, now there is a chemical in martian soil called perchlorates that would have to be washed out due to it being poisonous, but it was only discovered after making the film and its not that difficult to wash out. - Although theoretically you can travel between earth and mars at any time given enough energy, the optimum time is during the earth-mars transfer window which happens every 4 years. - The Hermes or any other spacecraft cannot just "turn around" without expending energy, more then they probably have available, that's why they had to do the slingshot.

I remember going to a JPL open house right before Pathfinder launched and seeing a working mock-up of the lander. They demonstrated all the ways they had of opening it depending on its orientation when it came to rest. They even had a way to open it if it was completely upside down.

Loved the book. Got introduced to it because Adam Savage (Myth busters) was raving about it on his podcast. Once I got it I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Real page Turner and hard scifi (most of the stuff in the book I theoretically possible today) here's the YT version of the interview with Andy Weir: https://youtu.be/5GXbVWJxi2Q

Most of the science in the book is sound. There are some minor discrepancies (the above mentioned storm and its impact on the MAV; the heat from the exothermic hydrazine reaction would have melted the hab; come to my mind). The movie has exaggerated some of the science even more. The book has many more scenes in which Mars tries to kill Mark which didn't make it to the movie for pacing and time reasons.

Really excellent editing of the video. It captures pretty much all the key elements of the movie. Even if one hadn't seen the movie this "recap" would totally make sense.
