Since Fifth Element tied, we flipped a coin and it landed on Martian. However we've incorporated Fifth Element into our schedule and will be available in a couple of weeks.

I just finished watching it with you guys. I am glad you liked it. Next time you watch it, I would watch the extended cut, it adds a few more things from the book that add a bit more about trying to exist somewhere inhospitable to life. Speaking of the book, it is even better than the movie, the internal monologue Watney has with himself is more complex and personality driven than the movie can portray. I have read it several times, I recommend it and the other Andy Weir novels. All of his books have been optioned, so we will get more from him eventually.

Thank you for mentioning what version they watched. I was just about to ask! :)

One of my favorites also :) I can't think of anything similar. Unless this is not space related, but something about being stranded on an island. Like Cast Away ;)

Such a good movie! Time to travel from Earth to Mars... months from launch. Time to get an unscheduled emergency launch ready... months to years, depending.

Note about Matt Damon. Never let him near an airlock. Ever.

"I need to get on a plane." You're going to fly to where Mark is?!?!

Signal delay time will vary based on where Earth and Mars are in their orbits around the Sun.

"One does not simply walk to Mars."

If it's not on a list, or if you haven't covered it yet, add the series "The Expanse" to react to.

I think one of the things to just go along with regarding the science in it is the idea of a storm and wind force on Mars that strong. Dust storms happen on Mars, but not like that. We're just asked to go along with it to get that initial problem to kick things off. Many scientists and engineers were consulted regarding the writing of this story. I love the small details that have significant effects, like forgetting to account for the exhaled oxygen when calculating the hydrazine burn rate to keep it stable or whether or not to use one of the two airlocks at the HAB consistently to preserve the integrity of the second one, but wears out the first one faster, or alternate using them so they wear in evenly... the prior leading to the HAB breach because of overworked materials.

It's on the DVD special features, but if you can find it there's an extra you should check out called "Ares III Revisited" which is presented as a news program exploring the infighting that was occurring behind the scenes at NASA during the Ares III mission. It fills in some of the gaps at the end, like why Martinez is going into space again despite participating in the "mutiny". The part where Watney is swearing over the chat reminded me of a scene in "From the Earth to the Moon". Some kids have come over to the astronaut training center on a field trip to see the Apollo 12 crew getting ready for their mission, until Pete Conrad, apparently having a bad day, starts swearing so the teacher quietly shuffles her class out.

And now I have to install Kerbal Space Program again...

Not to besmirch The 5th Element, but this movie will definitely age better, until I guess future, actual Martians are like getting stoned and watching it like it's the Reefer Madness of space travel. Also, yeah, you can't live off of potatoes alone for very long, some guy tried, died. But this is such a great movie, space is terrifying, it's literally exactly where humans are not supposed to be. The balls.

I think people at one time were skeptical about how they seem to "swim" in zero gravity but I'm pretty sure they were using air flow as doors were opened and pressure stabilized.

Most realistic Space movie ever is Spaceballs. You need to watch this movie. It will change your life.
