Family Dinner- Yes!!!! Lucifer is back, and I really love this second half of the season! And boy... did I need some time to take all that happens in. Whooo!!! Thank you so very much for your reaction to this amazing first... or rather, ninth episode of season five, Magyl!! I am so happy to see that you're so excited for Lucifer, and like always... Tom Ellis is phenomenal!! Oh... and in case you don't recognize the actor who plays the father who confesses to protect his children... he is none other than Lionel Luther from Smallville within this episode of Lucifer. The actor's name is John Glover, and I have seen him in many shows, either as a major character, or as just a guest star. He's famous for playing creepy and villainous characters, so I was surprised that his character here in this episode turned out to be innocent and a man who actually loves his children. So unlike Lionel Luther, that's for sure. As soon as I saw John Glover appear onscreen the first time I watched this episode, I couldn't help but assume he was the killer just because I know this actor as the bad guy in most of his appearances so well. Nonetheless... I really enjoyed how he plays his character here, and I love the parallels and discoveries Lucifer come to take away from the kind of father this man is. Now... I really enjoy getting a feeling for the kind of man God is throughout this episode. Dennis Haysbert as God is a fantastic choice! What a phenomenal actor he is as well! And God certainly seems like a good man, but He certainly hasn't been a very good father. At least not in his children's eyes, and in truth... while God may have had good intentions in how He has treated and raised His children, I too believe He has made some big mistakes by making them all wonder even for a moment if He does love them. Lucifer is more right than God and the others recognize. And it appears He might have just now come to discover how badly He's messed up with His children. And poor Lucifer. My heart truly breaks for him by the end of this episode. Wow... Tom Ellis is just incredible throughout this episode, especially throughout their family dinner, as well as in the very ending moments between him and Chloe too. I love seeing him finally being able to confront his father about what's so deeply been troubling him. And while Lucifer really could have gotten all the more angry, and there are so many questions that Lucifer could have asked him... Why did You cast me out of the Silver City and send me to Hell?, why did You put Chloe in my path, what is Your endgame?, etc... and yet, Lucifer digs deep down and simply, yet tragically asks if their father has ever truly loved them. And because God simply answers with yet another vague answer, Lucifer sadly comes to the realization that his father isn't capable of love, and therefore he isn't capable of love either. That he isn't capable of loving Chloe, which is why he's been unable to say I love you to Chloe. Thanks to his father, as well as from the realizations he gains from their case. And all of this is because deep down... Lucifer doesn't feel like he is capable of being loved. Least of all by his own father. So heartbreaking. While Lucifer coming to this realization is frustrating for us as this show's viewers because we all believe he is far more capable of love than he understands, I also really do understand why Lucifer feels this way. And for me, it's far more tragic than frustrating. We've seen all the good in Lucifer and we know that after everything he's done for Chloe, as well as for everyone else in his life, that Lucifer truly cares so deeply about them all. So, of course we all know how deeply Lucifer truly loves Chloe. However, Lucifer has never felt love from his father and his siblings, who all hate him aside from Amenadiel and Azrael. Just like I've always suspected. And now, because he feels like he is more like his father than Lucifer ever realized before, he feels all the more incapable of feeling loved and therefore incapable of loving someone else, including Chloe. I am absolutely loving the direction of the second half of this season. Especially in regards to Lucifer's and Chloe's storyline, even though their relationship sadly once again takes another difficult hit. I also really love Lucifer's storyline involving God, Michael, and Amenadiel too. So, so much! Also... I really love the moment when Lucifer and Michael are arguing back and forth before God stops them, as Lucifer reveals to us why Michael moves and walks with his right shoulder higher than the other... because he carries a chip on his shoulder so vehemently, that his infliction comes from his own self actualization. Brilliant! Next... I absolutely love the awkwardness at their family dinner, especially coming from Linda, who is so adorable and funny. As is Amenadiel too. And I really love how Chloe is making an effort to help Lucifer, only to discover that she is the one who has messed up this time by trying to push Lucifer much too hard, too fast in trying to get him over his family issues. I love that while Chloe didn't initially allow Lucifer to express his feelings after finding at LUX in the beginning when he had run away from the station, Chloe does quickly come to understand that Lucifer isn't actually upset or angry with her, but at his family upon listening to Lucifer taking his emotions and anger out on the family in their case. And then... I love how she later comes to realize that throughout their whole case, she has been able to realize that it really is herself that has put the strain between her and Lucifer because she has been pushing him much too far, too fast. In regards to Maze and her coming before God to ask him for a soul... while I do want to feel sorry for her and her moment upon being turned down is sad, I am still angry with her for once again turning against Lucifer and Amenadiel in the previous episode... Spoiler Alert. For me... Maze has a lot of work to do in order to redeem herself, before she earns her way back into my good graces. And then... Ella's storyline is very good and I am loving seeing her struggle from what's happened with Pete, while trying to overcome her own pain. It's so sad, but I love Dan's talk with her inside her lab when he tries to remind her of how truly good and lovely she really is, and pleads with her to not allow her pain to change her. So beautiful!!! I love it!! And lastly... I love seeing Dan growing used to knowing the celestial truth, especially about Lucifer now that he has to get used to the idea that the Devil is working alongside them. And while it wasn't too long ago that Dan had shot Lucifer, it's nice to see them acting civilly and more like friends again. Overall... this is a fantastic episode, and I really enjoy it! Just as I really enjoyed watching your reaction for this episode too. So, thank you very much again, Magy!!! I can't wait for the rest of your reactions for the rest of this season!!! The next episode is a musical episode, and it's absolutely phenomenal! It's easily one of my favorite episodes from this season, as well as from the entire show overall too!!! And I can't wait for your reaction to it!!! Thank you again, dear friend! Sincerely, Heidi
