i think this episode is another turning point. we've gotten more glimpses into who shawn is, but this episode really went hard with that. shawn isn't just a silly kid who doesn't want to apply himself in school. he has interest and desires and this episode showcased that. i think it was the first time he saw himself as having more, doing more, being more. he had this desire to go to europe because he realized he could. and that opened something in him. i think mr. turner saw that. it wasn't just shawn wanting to run away, he could run away anywhere. but he wanted to go to europe, he wanted to go to paris (even if he messed up and accidentally was going to wind up in paris texas) and because of that, turner made that deal with him, that they could go together. this is a turning point and we really see shawn wanting to explore the world and his interests and find himself. a big part of boy meets world is shawn hunter just desperately trying to find himself outside of the boy from the trailer park, outside of just corey's best friend. he wants to find who he is. and i LOVED when he lowkey referred to mr. turner as his dad. it was a great call back to what he'd said earlier in the episode about how "you're not my dad." i think of the line from the movie stand by me when chris is told that, and his response is, "i wish the hell i was your dad." i think that was something unspoken in that scene between shawn and mr. turner. they went from just being "buddies" to shawn really recognizing him as his father figure. i don't think he had just yet. that's why he was so quick to play hookie to order pay per view in his bath robe. he didn't seen turner as a dad. just a "buddy." this episode was kind of a wake up call for him and he realized he does have that father figure he's probably wanted his whole life. chet....i don't want to say too much about chet hunter. but he definitely made his mistakes when it came to raising shawn. i think this episode was a turning point for lots of things

2023-05-29 21:22:49 That scene between Shawn and Turner is one of my favourites. First of all, I love the line "Shawn Hunter. Europe. Bus." And the delivery is perfect! I love them. But then it gets very real. With Shawn explaining why he wants to take off, and Turner really listening. Because Turner's been GREAT. I'm not gonna say he hasn't because he really has. But Shawn didn't yet really see him as a parental figure, he saw him as a friend. A friend he feels like he's a burden on at that. He's still very much getting used to having a parental figure who actually cares, and that's gotta be huge for him. I do agree that certain things really do suck for Cory and Turner, because they DO just wanna help. But I feel like you've gotta really look at things from Shawn's POV here. Both his parents just took off and then suddenly he had all these rules he wasn't used to having and he was feeling suffocated and trapped at the Matthews', and then with Turner he feels like a burden. He said it himself too, that he's used to being on his own and taking care of himself, so I feel like a big part of it all is him trying to protect himself from disappointment when (in his mind) they inevitably all get sick of him and abandon him like his parents did. Also, the scene right before he sees the Counsellor the first time, he says to Cory "He didn't even wanna talk about it." in regards to Turner sending him to talk to the Guidance Counsellor. I feel like that was a HUGE thing for the episode. Shawn wanted to talk to Turner about it, but he wasn't going to be the one to start it up because he didn't wanna burden him, as later said when Jon eventually did try to talk to him about it ("Jon, give yourself a break.") He's a kid who already has a lot of trauma. His parents abandoned him, also taking his home away and all his stuff. From what we've heard about the rest of his family, that's not great either. Same with the rest of the Trailer Park, the things he's casually mentioned about it is concerning. Really, he probably should be talking to an actual Therapist and working through it all. But that's not gonna happen, TV shows very rarely have characters actually get Therapy... But yeah, so to him, Jon sending him to talk to the Guidance Counsellor was him showing him he didn't want to talk to him about these things. Which is why that scene at the Bus Station was so important, because he told him he did wanna talk about it. Shawn's just a complicated character with a lot of issues that come from his family... He does need to stop putting Cory in these situations though, asking him to lie for him to everyone. But Cory should probably also stop doing it when he wasn't even asked to, because by doing that it becomes kinda expected of him to Shawn. I love them though. <333
