He was in Hot Fuzz

Manly Stump

Slater was played by Jim Broadbent; he's been in all sorts, but you probably recognise him as the inspector (Danny's dad) in Hot Fuzz!

AWR93

This episode and the next are certainly 2 of the best of this series. From the start of series 4 is when around half of the UK were tuning in to every episode, so many classics to come!

Anonymous

The Policeman is Jim Broadbent, legendary English Actor. Has been in Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and Hot Fuzz among others.

Daniel Davies

Jim Broadbent was in the running to play Del-Boy when the series was being developed, but obviously David Jason got the role but John Sullivan remembered him and offered him the part of Slater. I think Slater is THE ‘Only Fools and Horses’ antagonist, even though he only made three appearances in the entire run, he definitely made his mark.

When Slater said the Porridge is lumpy, he is referring to jail time. In England we say doing a stretch, doing bird, or doing porridge in reference to a prison sentence. EDIT : Porridge starring Ronnie Barker needs to be added to upcoming shows. A true British Classic TV show from the 70's.

I adore Jim Broadbent he's such a great actor. As others said before, he was in hot fuzz. His next appearance is in a feature long o.f.a.h episode.. 'to hull and back' one of my fave episodes!

Anonymous

You should give Inside No 9 a shot just for one episode to see If people will be into it. It's a show that totally relies on not being spoiled though, so If you watch It at any point, watch this episode as it's the one people will spoil first https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm31963037 The only free version I could find sadly.

You've seen the actor who played Roy Slater in Hot Fuzz. He played the Inspector in that film, that's where you likely recognise him :). I do believe that John Sullivan had Jim Broadbent the guy who played Slator in mind to originally play Del Boy but he apparently rejected to role.

Love this episode 😂 Quick question for you Josh... how many of the phrases/insults/slang do you miss? We love to use slang for absolutely everything over here and there are some on OFAH that even I have never heard before. Im just curious how much of it is new to you? Also, are there any new phrases or slang words that you have picked up from watching UK TV in general?

I wonder if the person who said that the next 2 episodes are the best of the series just meant Series 3? Out of the whole series though? - not at all. Doesn't line up with either my opinion or most others I've seen. Most of the commonly high rated episodes (polls and so on) are Series 6 onwards - which I agree with.

Anonymous

Yea I’m sure thats what it was. No way that the next two episodes are even in the top 10 for me

makadeni123

Also hes just reacting to the ones available on netflix. Only half of the entire show. Tea for 3 personally I find to be an underrated episode

Ash Jeffries

Great reaction Josh! I spent the whole episode hoping you wouldn't guess that last line from Del as it would spoil the ending, haha. I've seen it so many times so it's probably less predictable than I remember the first time but you're very good at guessing twists so I was genuinely pleased that you got to the end without pre-empting it! :-D Jim Broadbent is an acting legend, back here he was relatively unknown but he's gone on to star in many things such as Hot Fuzz, but also films including Moulin Rouge! and the more recent Cloud Atlas which also starred Hugh Grant and Tom Hanks. The next three episodes are top drawer for the early years I'd say (Wanted, Who's A Pretty Boy? and the excellent Christmas episode Thicker Than Water which concludes series 3). The series overall just gets better and better and I think the 50 minute episodes of series 6 are the best of the bunch but for the early years, the latter half of series 3 is very strong. :-)

BelladonnicHazeyJaneII

Thanks for the reaction Josh, I really like this episode. Jim Broadbent does such a good job as Slater. You'll be seeing him again :) I'm guessing the person who told you that about the next 2 episodes might have meant the best out of just this series (season) not the whole of OFAH. I do really like those 2 episodes but they aren't necessarily favourites for me personally. Sure you'll find them enjoyable though :) Loved your reaction at the end when he says 'I did' :D

makadeni123

Insp Slater was played by Oscar winner Jim Broadbent. He was the chief cop in Hot Fuzz. He was also the number 1 choice to play Del Boy as Sullivan didnt think DJ was the right man

Steve King

I don't remember the Series numbers and episode names but my favorites are from the Uncle Albert era which is Season 4 onward

David Lyons

For the greater good!

Steve King

Translations Old Bill = Police Nick (ed) = Arrest(ed) Grass = Snitch

Steve King

A fun fact for you Josh, when he says at the end "You've got less chance of a pull [being arrested] than the Queen" that's not just based on who she is. She literally is immune from prosecution for any crime. When you are sent to prison in the UK you are "held at her Majesty's pleasure". Of course in practice the Government make the laws and run the police etc but "technically" she does so she cannot break her own laws.

Happiest Aku

He played Frank Butterman in Hot Fuzz.

Anonymous

Thats the second time that you would have seen actor Jim Broadbent play the role of a crooked copper on this reaction show- though obviously here he’s not quite as “murder-ery” as he was on Hot Fuzz! 😂

Anonymous

I don't know if you watch Harry Potter but he is Slughorn 😁

Anonymous

Dude, I completely agree that Josh should *some day* watch Inside No. 9, but it really just needs to be added to the next poll, and he needs to know that it's an anthology series with a different story every episode. I also honestly think there's an evolutionary journey we're sending Josh on here: he's seen a couple of League of Gentlemen clips, so for me it'd be much more preferable for him to watch that first, and get a feel for the Pemberton/Shearsmith/Gatiss style. It goes LoG>Psychoville>IN9. Definite evolution there, and some of us would like him to appreciate it. I also vehemently object to you giving him a link to *that* particular episode. It's the best episode of the entire series, so you're only setting him up for disappointment by suggesting he watches it now... and without any proper understanding of who Reece and Steve are. C'mon, dude... play the long game. Think about what you're suggesting, rather than just wanting him to react to your particular favourite thing immediately.

Anonymous

Are you the one who erroneously told him the next two eps are the best, then? Sure sounds like it :-)

Anonymous

At around 15 million viewers I'm guessing you mean half of the viewing audience rather than population! In any case, still a lot.

Ash Jeffries

I meant to say in my comment above too that I love that T-shirt Josh! :-D Your T shirts are always legendary but this is my favourite so far I think! :-D

Wilss

I think everyone just has a different view on what is the best. I think it also comes into play at when you started watching it or what just hits you the most regarding characters and story. i.e no spoilers but series 1-3 are my favorite of Red Dwarf, but a lot of people would say 3-6 and I can totally get that. So it just has to do with preference. I'd say just watch them and make your own mind up.

Anonymous

You recognise Slater as the police chief (Danny's dad) in Hot Fuzz.

Anonymous

I love how Jim Broadbent is The main villain in hot fuzz and his motivation in this is quite similar to why Angel has to move to Sanford!

Teddy Alison

Another great episode. Del always knows how to get himself out of a sticky situation!

Anonymous

You may have seen Jim Broadbent's in a lot of stuff, such a Bridget Jones, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones etc. He's pretty prolific, particularly with UK based or made movies. He has an Oscar, BAFTA, and several Golden Globes under his belt, as well as several Emmy nominations.

Anonymous

I’d say episode 7 is a very good one in this season, but personally I think all the best episodes are in seasons 5 and 6. Not to say that the rest of season 3 and season 4 aren’t good👍🏻

Anonymous

Roger Lloyd-Pack who plays Trigger is also in The Vicar of Dibley, worth a watch too :)

Daniel French

Good Episode, but it only gets better from here on!! I know people have mentioned it before (including me), but you should certainly react to some of the big Top Gear and Grand Tour specials, like the Vietnam Special and Survival of the Fattest

AfterWorkReactions

Yes I just looked him up he has been in a bunch of stuff I have seen lol. That is awesome man thanks for the info. Take care.

AfterWorkReactions

This was a very good episode I enjoyed it a whole lot. I am looking forward to the next few. Take care bud!

AfterWorkReactions

Wouldn't agree the next 2 episodes are some of the best, they're good but not nearly the best imo.

Anonymous

Jim broadbent (Slater ) was originally cast as a possible delboy. glad he wasnt.
