Steve King

"Softly, softly, catchy monkey" is a phrase that means if you be patient and do the right things without being impatient you can achieve your goal.

Great reaction, little fact for you the taller warehouse bloke is Jay's dad of inbetweeners did you get onto that?. And it is Stephen merchant on the answering machine.

Steve King

Surprised you didn't notice that "Taffy", the warehouse foreman, is Jay's bullying dad from the Inbetweeners

Steve King

Yep, Stephen Merchant also makes a cameo at some point in the series. I always found it strange that he didn't play Gareth. Don't get it twisted, Mackenzie Crook is brilliant in the role but when they wrote the original script and before they casted actors you'd have thought Stephen who was already there would have been the obvious choice to portray the weird nerdy guy.

Steve's does make an eventual appearance .! It is brief and but hysterical. The office is definitely a slow burn! But totally worth the wait x

Michael Harrop

This episode is a great example of the stress David has about the fact hes being filmed. He is obsessed with trying to make himself look good to the audience, constantly telling the camera what a good boss, funny guy he is. Always talking about how much he hates sexism. Then when the power and control starts to get taken away from him and hes embarrassed and made to look a fool by his boss. He just falls apart trying to salvage it and make himself look good. Ricky's performance in The Office is so underrated, you can see every emotion Brent is going through on his face.

I don't think the Office regularly goes for the 'big belly laughs' like a lot of other comedies, and something I think the US version went for a bit more. It's all about the understated cringe, and being a bit more real. Not to say there aren't hilarious moments in there, but the understated subtlety works so much better for making Brent and Gareth in particular stand out. Also Tim and Dawn (can't remember their names in the US one, Jim and Pam?) their friendship and the really understated vibes of attraction (her little peaks over the desk while he was joking around with the new girl, playing with her hair, the little touches, Tim's body language all guiltily when her fiancée walked in in the last ep etc) is so much more meaningful in this - I was super disappointed in the US version a lot of the subtlety was missing and it really stole some of the investment I had in the characters. I think the reason it becomes such a favourite to people is how invested you get in the story and the escalation as it goes on and that is what heightens the comedy a great deal.

The show does make me laugh out loud but the humour often comes from the characters rather than situations. Basically everything Keith says is hilarious, but I guess you have to get to know him first

Michael

theres always an end credits scene, btw

I think with the office you go in expecting a comedy and as it goes on you truly begin to realise just how brilliantly written it is instead.

Ryan Lynch

RIP Sessions at 6.09 Definite genius.

Danny

Most of the episodes do actually have something after the credits. It's only usually about 3 seconds of a clip but it can sometimes just be a little call back to something in the episode. Nothing major but the credits for The Office is probably only about 10 seconds long, so it's not bad to sit through it

Can't wait until you see the rest of the Show Josh. You might not be able to tell right now, but it's genuinely one of the best shows ever made. Not just the comedy, but the awkwardness and the tension that builds in certain scenes. It's palpable. I've not seen a TV show that does cringe as well as the Office. There's so many laugh out loud moments coming up too. Just to add what the others have mentioned, be sure to wait till the very end of the episode.

AfterWorkReactions

Ok thanks man, I will sit through them. I never watch opening or closing credits on anything so I am so used to skipping over them.

AfterWorkReactions

Ok thanks man I never watch the opening or end credits for anything so I will have to remember to do that.

Great reaction Josh and I'm so glad you enjoyed this more than episode 1. I think first episodes of most shows are never as good as it's going to be. You don't know the characters, you're not completely in tune with the style or tone of the show and much of my enjoyment of any show comes from the familiarity of all those elements. The Office UK genuinely improves as it goes along though and not purely down to familiarity but the writing is off the charts in the latter half of series 1 and series 2. It's not just a comedy - almost a drama with funny bits. I love that quote from David Brent regarding what he considers genius: "If you were to ask me to name three geniuses, I probably wouldn't say Einstein, Newton... [struggles for a third]. I'd go Milligan, Cleese, Everett. Sessions." Spike Milligan (contributed to so many things but of what you've seen The Two Ronnies and Monty Python.) John Cleese - Monty Python and Fawlty Towers (writer and star). Kenny Everett - Surreal character comedian with his own show... a much racier and near-the-knuckle comedy output but with a similar format to The Two Ronnies and Morecambe and Wise. John Sessions - passed away this week :-( He was only 67. He was the height of British quick wit. Contributed to many British panel shows (not a format used for American TV as far as I'm aware) such as Have I Got News For You, QI, and probably most famously, Whose Line Is It Anyway? I just love the detail of David, a self-professed comedian, struggling to name three actual geniuses and then naming four people to whom he aspires probably to be. Fantastic character detail. I think you'll love the next episode and episode 4 is the best episode of series 1 IMHO.... and a widely celebrated episode for fans I believe. :-D

Anyone remember a show called The Worst Week Of My Life? The UK version, not the US one called Worst Week.

Andrew

Just in case anyone is interested ,just Googled "Sex Fetish" About 408,000,000 results (0.50 seconds) compared to the 2,230 back in 2001

Too smart for QI I always thought. Incredibly knowledgeable.

Danny

Just thought, in the next episode there's a well known scene near the end which brings up "Fray Bentos". It is a brand mainly in the UK known for making savoury tinned pies.

Saul

I doubt it was only 2k even back then. I think it was probably just an inaccurate figure. Not that I know anything about this subject, or indeed what porn even is.

Did you not recognise anyone in this episode, in the warehouse being all cocky and 'alpha male', spouting in front of the female boss while David Brent (Ricky Gervais) was present and trying to backtrack?.. Its Jays Dad from the Inbetweeners. To cut a long story short - the director of The Office went on to direct and co-write 'The Inbetweeners'. So you can see how this character of warehouse manager manifested into Jays Dad... its not only the same actor, but the same character. its also why when you watch The Inbetweeners - you find so many mannerisms and phrases that was in The Office re-used like "oooh, kinky'. Loads of nuences between the shows... ** edit - might not have been the director, its a wheelchair bound gentleman who worked on the office and also worked on The Inbetweeners*

or I could have just found this You Tube vid and saved all the hassle of typing :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIQdNOK14Bg

Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant directed every episode of The Office, and neither Damon Beesley nor Iain Morris (creators of The Inbetweeners) were *ever* involved in The Office at all. Where are you getting the link to The Inbetweeners from, apart from David Schaal, who as you say starred in both? I love that people fill Josh in on stuff, but what I've really come to dislike recently is when people tell him stuff that isn't actually true, because he repeats it in his videos. I might have got completely the wrong end of the stick, in which case I apologise, but my inkling is that you're mistaken in what you're saying and should have another think. That said, good point re. Jay's dad. Josh is usually really good - amazing, actually - at recognising actors he's seen in stuff before. Including, recently, both Will's mum and Neil's dad. So I forgive him this one slip!

Yo Josh. I just wanted to mess with your head a second. So I just did a little calculation and I reckon you're going to finish The Office Season 2 on Thursday January 14th, then if you watch the 2 specials, they'll be on January 28th. They're Christmas episodes, and it might be nice to actually watch them at Christmas time. SO, my suggestion is that you knock out 2 episodes on a Thursday instead of one, then you'll be able to watch both of the episodes on December 17th. On the other hand, I might just be fucking with your system.

AfterWorkReactions

Hey thanks for the suggestion bud but I most likely won't be able to swing 2 episodes. I have a pretty tight schedule the next 2 months as my day job is in retail management. I am looking forward to checking the rest of the show now.

LOL class reaction as always bro, that was Steve on the phone at the start too you were right! Also was that jays dad from the inbetweeners in the warehouse watching the dogs shag? 😂

Super Mega Giga Chad

Ricky was poking fun at virtue signaling before it was a thing. “Yeah but I really hate sexism , I’ve said that”

Don't forget that there's always an extra easter egg, at the end after the credits

I'm sure I've watched these before, why are they blurred out now?
