For years I've making a list in my head of all the things Smallville did better than the DC tv shows on today. One of them... is politics. Now I've always been in the camp of "always keep superheroes and politics separate UNLESS it's absolutely crucial for a particular character's story arc." Several superhero shows on now (cough*Supergirl*cough) don't know how to do that. They are written by clearly biased writers who have some sort of agenda up their sleeves. If you don't agree with the view that they give you then you're wrong. I never felt that from Smallville. This episode didn't feel like they're trying to give any kind of broad anti-immigration or anti-border patrol message to hammer into us. It just looked at one particular situation and focused on what was most crucial at the moment for this character (which is finding his mother). Now you could make the argument that even Smallville was biased because the message is that as long as you're here for an innocent purpose it doesnt matter if you're illegal or not. I can see how one might get that impression, I never felt that from this. I always saw it as a way of creating a parallel of sorts for Clark and his unique background (as this show has always done) in a way they haven't before and it wasnt thrown in our faces as it applies to the real political climate as a whole. I just wish the biased shows on today would finally take the hint.

Personally I don’t mind when ‘politics’ is involved in shows. I also don’t think its an agenda they’re trying to push I think there just shedding light on a issue they feel strongly on. I can see why people would think that though especially if they have opposing views. I really like how smallville brings light to these issues in a more grounded way. Like you said it feels natural to the story especially with Clark technically being an illegal alien. I think if the dc tv shows did it in this way it would be much better received.
