The problem NATO is just a disguised version of US sphere of influence . We wouldn’t be chill if Mexico and Canada squaded up with Russia. I didn’t mind a more serious discussion, it’s been a while. Guy is a tough nut to crack and he didn’t give up laughs easily. Back in 2014 I brought up the Budapest Memorandum to mostly deaf ears and I’m surprised it wasn’t discussed considering everything they covered. Regardless of disagreeing with some conclusions, this was a more interesting discussion than I’ve seen most have recently because of the details. Why should the US come to the defense of Ukraine? The Budapest memorandum which when I was a teenager was a big deal, if you didn’t grow up with the constant threat of nuclear war breaking out I get that this may not resonate too. No one is ever giving up their offensive nukes again if Ukraine goes down, and probably weren’t going to just because of 2014 anyway. That’s the one takeaway that’s certain

My take is that Simon is probably a little too buttoned up for this segment, but I still found it to be a good episode. Look the dude has credentials obviously, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing for there to be a disagreement on the overall narrative. I enjoyed Anna and Dasha’s commentary and I thought they were more trying to disarm any disagreements throughout the interview. I enjoyed it overall.

Was this for real? How come Anna is smarter than this "expert?" Why isn't he answering Anna's repeated question "what's Putin's motivation?" in good faith? The "imperialism" answer is ??? Thing is even in those conflicts NATO got involved mainly to fuck over Russia's imperialist interests in the Arab World and Eastern Europe. If NATO wasn't a thing or at least hadn't expanded eastwards Russia would be thriving in Eurasia the same way China is thriving in Asia right now. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church was legit created a few years ago. The orthodox bishops signed off on it. It was crafted by US intelligence to create a schism in the Russian Orthodox faith. The Greek bishops were paid off and agreed to recognize it as legitimate. It should have never happened. You can’t just create new orthodox churches out of thin air. As others have pointed out, there’s been a lot of weirdness in the “fan base” lately, especially on the subreddit. There’s been a huge influx of suspiciously young account commenters and a bizarre and increasingly not-so-subtle tone shift that is hard to articulate. For a sub in which the majority of its user base doesn’t even listen to the pod anymore/never has, the Anna and Dasha hate has been off the charts and the comment threads feel eerily awry. I partially disagree with some of the takes here, however I do feel like many of the takes are directionally correct. I warmed up to this guy as the pod went on and at the end I felt that this was actually a damn good interview and way more worthwhile than I was thinking it would be. I love the pod. But this episode sucks. The maximum depth of these two are spot on cultural takes, specifically about the vampant perv nature of the left. But this guest is speculating about the origin and resolving actual human suffering, real live adult angles to a geo political situation that only broadly touches them in their cultural origin and their horrid laughing, obvious discomfort with content that requires them to stfu and have think of the complex needs of humans outside of fucking seed oils and fillers. I would call this episode a total embarrassment. Their snarkiness cannot hide how bought and sold these two bitches are bought by whichever right wing think tank they currently work for see: Eli. Whatever. God forbid they acknowledge that daddy Putin is a monster. They discredited this loser in the first five minutes with the Hunter Biden stuff and then multiple times throughout the conversation he contradicts himself, though my favorite might be his whining about how Taibi hasn't apologized to him personally for calling him a neolib and then in the next breath saying he doesn't care what people say online. Just ultimately can't take anyone seriously who can't even fathom that Russia/Putin could possibly have their own realpolitik/practical motivations for acting one way or another, not that you have to agree with or support them, whose "insightful" analysis is as deep as "Putin is a madman". Ok no seems to have brought it up, so….fuck it, I’m just gonna say it. Calling India ‘openly in support of Russia’ is deeply inaccurate. USSR/Russia has been a long-term, consistent ally of India, supporting the country at a time when US and other Western nations acted against its interests. It did not make sense to alienate a historical ally for an absolute flaky one like the USA, especially in a voting scenario that was frankly inconsequential. Meanwhile, had India voted against Russia, it would have had to face increasing hostility in the form of Pak-Russia and China-Russia alliances in the region. Nevertheless, India has been extremely critical of Russia’s actions in all its statements. All of which can be found by doing a simple Google search. Blanket statements do not do justice to nuanced issues.

Good ep, it went both ways imo. I have some respect for Ostrovsky for his reporting with Vice News during the Crimean conflict (“Russian Roulette in Ukraine”). Given his experience of being held hostage by pro-Russian militants in Ukraine, he’s obviously biased, but not for the reasons these uncritical fanboys are whining about.

As someone with a military background let me tell you what's going on. Yes putin is 100% rational. He wants Crimea, land access and control because it is Russia's only warm water port and provides direct access to the Mediterranean. Losing Crimea is an existential and legacy threat to putin and Russia. Turkey is only in NATO so they can close the black sea strait in the event of war, this is why Russia helped Syria in exchange for a naval base on the opposite side of the strait. And yes he will take all of Ukraine if he can because he needs a buffer against Ukraine but also a place to launch an offensive against Europe through the mountains when WW3 comes. It's all geography. And yes WW3 is coming, Russia and China are just setting the stage for it. Everyone knows about the Thuclides trap. But more than that you are seeing the opening shots of an economic war, Russia has been dedollarizing quickly and intently for the last decade. China has positioned itself through a trade surplus and massive gold reserves [not to mention oil (oh wait Russia too)] to make a run at the US petro dollar when they un-peg the yuan from the US dollar.

Just because Dasha and Anna are sympathetic to the west’s involvement and provocations in Ukraine obviously doesn’t mean they are pro-Putin or cool with war. However, at the same time Simon is not dumb for pointing out Russia’s involvement, and importantly Ukraine’s own agency. Americans love to think other countries don’t have control over their actions. That being said, Putin invading Ukraine is an insane move that I think we should all be able to condemn. And that doesn’t mean we should go to war either. Situation is messed up. The alliance between Russia and China is real as well and people need to see this isn’t just isolated from the world stage.
