This is one of the best written films of all time. Every detail seems to be accounted for and it was SO MUCH FUN to revisit. Looking forward to rewatching the rest.

This film taught me more about storytelling as a child than just about anything else. The way so many details are sprinkled into the early present day scenes to set up everything we're about to see in the '50s, and with none of it feeling awkward or shoehorned in, is just a masterclass of writing. It's also fun to revisit the days when movies could just drop us into a situation without giving us a full explanation of everything to satisfy the pedants at TV Tropes, like why a high school student is hanging out with an old weirdo inventor (which incidentally is literally the only thing John Mulaney got right in his routine about how weird the movie supposedly is, even though at the start of it he claims to have just recently rewatched it). Apparently the original script did explain how their friendship started, but in between changing a bunch of other stuff like the time machine being a refrigerator, they figured it wasn't really necessary and people would be willing to go with it if the movie was just fun enough.

You hit it on the head, it doesn't feel awkward of shoehorned in. Many people have tried to replicate and it comes across as "look at this so you remember it later and see how clever we are." And yes, them being friends is kind of weird, but I don't *NEED* an explanation, because their chemistry is so fun you do just go with it.

I love this movie( number 3 is actually my favorite of the series). I'm excited for you to get to number 2, because the plot makes absolutely no sense given the movie's own internal logic, so I'm excited to discuss that!

2 makes a LOT more sense when you know about the behind the scenes issues they were under.
