protip if you suspect your GM is plotting to kill you (second protip: your GM *is* plotting to kill you). introduce friends and family with the understanding that they are intended as backup characters. That way, the GM cannot kill them before you get a chance to play them (or at least, not without looking like a dick), and they are easily brought into the group. My character in a Vaesen campaign I'm in has already introduced his brother/lawyer, a noblewoman who is in his debt, and a drunken bullshit artist who frequents the tavern owned by my character.
