Updated post! This morning the incorrect video file was uploaded!! oof my bad! Here is the new version of the video.

Let's talk really quick over the new overlay, this is there as a protection of our channel, we have been fighting the censor both on Youtube and on our Patreon videos. Placing an overlay over the video of original content we are reacting to helps protect our channel under the fair use act. Last month we had our entire page wiped because of CBS censorship and our now looking to prevent this from happening again.  While the Patreon edits have better volume and a full version of the episode, we are not here to simply provide you with a full episode of a network show. Future video posts will have  new overlays over the show content. This will be the last video uploaded without new overlay.

The Gallifrey Gals are getting Warped! on this weeks episode Q is back! How will Katrina feels about that! Katrina's first encounter with the Borg!

Sorry for the difficulties the channel has been having. Hopefully you find a solution that works for most and allows you to keep making content. I personally have no problems with syncing up an outside version to a reaction, as I do that with another group, Blind Wave, anyways.

Anonymous

I appreciate the effort you are going to, to continue to get these videos to us! I have one quality of life suggestion: Would it be possible to give some timestamps around the start of the video to make synchronizing with Netflix easier? I can check it during the (TNG) theme song, but I'd love to be able to be in sync from the start. I do not comment often so I also want to take the opportunity to thank you for your great videos I really enjoy all of your shows tremendously!

Now for the reaction itself! Another great episode!!! Continuing to build their characters through the storytelling. This time it's Guinan who gets a little boost of interest. It's not just that she knows Q, it's that she could sense the Captain was gone. The little hints to what/who she might be just make her so much more intriguing. And Whoopi plays it perfectly. Regarding the Borg... I am not too sure what to say. But Katrina herself says she is sure they are coming back, so no spoilers of course, but I will talk about them in that context. The introduction of quite possible the greatest villains in Star Trek, and we haven't even heard their "catchphrase" yet. haha. On the comparisons with Cyberman. That is absolutely there. Almost every sci fi has to have their biological/technological hybrid. I would be curious to see the roots of such a creation actually. Inspiration a bit from Frankenstein, but even that is still all biological. The way Guinan talks about them as if they are locusts definitely inspires fear. And the choice to have the Borg ignore the crew unless they directly are interfered with is such a smart decision. It only adds to the tension. That is how insignificant they find us. And then Picard at the end with Q. Just another step in proving that Picard is just the best. Always willing to do what is necessary to save lives. He essentially begs Q for help, and doesn't lose any respect or authority because of it. Because asking for help is not a sign of weakness for him. I love it so much!!!!

Andrew Ramos

synchronizing is easy and lets us adjust the volume levels how we see fit. Match the scenes then press play on both and repeatedly start stop whichever video is ahead until its synced, took all of 10 seconds.

John

Do what you need to do to protect your channel. TNG and DW are both available on Amazon Prime as well. TNG is included with your Prime membership, but DW has to be purchased separately. That's how I watched your first upload this afternoon, sync'ing up your video with the episode playing in another window. It worked fine. If we have a good view of the intro, etc. to help us sync up, it's not a problem. I would love to be able to download your reactions. If there's a way to do it, I can't find it in the player. Ensign Gomez is adorable. When I was in college, I had a co-op education job at NASA and I worked with many people with her mindset. They had to be the best because only the best got to be there. Her portrayal was very true to life. I mentioned it on the first upload, but did you notice Worf guarding the door to Ten Forward when he left, while Q and Picard were talking?

John

And thank you for confirming you're continuing with Trek reactions. I'd lose my mind if you stopped before Paula's favorite episode.

I personally say that the Borg made it to Federation and Romulan territory, and they determined that they were not worth the time. Then, they watched a federation starship fly 7,000 lightyears in a few seconds. Which would be why the only thing they cared about was the ship's engines, they wanted to know how they did it

3d chess goes all the way back to the second pilot of Star Trek

Something I forgot to mention in my last post is that I agree with Q being Chaotic Neutral. Guinan is a little harder to pin down, though. I wanted to say Lawful Neutral, but I don't think that fits. If I had to settle on one alignment for her, I think I would choose Neutral Good. Also, I actually have one of those multi-level Star Trek chess sets. One was gifted to me when I was a kid. Unfortunately, I've never learned how to play it.

Steven morgan

I’ve been waiting for this for so long. I used to have this episode in a box set when box sets realy were box sets. It was vhs and the box was designed to look like a Borg ship it was like a big toy I loved it. Yeah the Borg are similar to the cybermen . Brilliant reaction girls but not enough dancing in the credits 😆😆😆😆😂

Steven morgan

Oh also to let you know that the majority of the remaster was just sd to hd, their isn’t that much of a change, the effects really were that good back then.

Chris Lane- Venturi 3D

This is an excellent episode but I agree the B plot wasn't really necessary and I would have liked to have seen more build up to the A plot. The dialogue in this episode is some of the best. Q is definitely about Ego, but also loves to use the Enterprise as his plaything and who knows what else in the future...(I mean IF he ever shows up again) ;)

Doug C

(Paula, skip to the next message.) Katrina, do have a better understanding of that entity that Rick was competing with for Unity now? :-)

Judge Brehon

I like the call back to the mystery created in S1 finale :The Neutral Zone. I understand the aliens responsible for the Romulan and Federation colonies being destroyed were originally supposed to be completely different (more insect looking, not Cyber humanoids) but they changed them to become the Borg. Although I guess they do still have a Hive. Wonder how much carry over there really was??

Anonymous

I have spent way too much time thinking about Star Trek :D

Anonymous

I've heard that basically, the whole second season was supposed to be about that; but, between the writer's strike, the political battles between Maurice Hurley and Rick Berman, the whole thing got killed off. The reason behind Shades of Grey being a clip show was that the studio wanted another episode in the season, and had to do it on a 3 day turn around time to make up for the time lost to the strike

Judge Brehon

Blessing in disguise, I suppose. Can't picture the Star Trek universe without the Borg.

Chrissonator

3D chess is actually a real thing, surprisingly. I love this episode and the precedent it sets.

Anonymous

This episode explains the outposts that were destroyed in season 1 "The Neutral Zone" When data says that the planets in the J25 system looked to have identical damage as the outposts along the neutral zone.

Chrissonator

When it comes to the remastered aspect, season 2 is closer in look to the original effects than season 1, 3-7, but I think the remastering of 1, 3-7 is mindblowing, you'll certainly notice a big difference from the first episode of season 3. The remastering uses all the original effects passes where possible, minus obvious effects like phaser beams, shields, etc. So, the Borg Cube regenerating is the original effects shot back in the 80's, simply rescanned from the original camera negatives. Very few shots were required to be redone using CGI. :)

Brendon Waldron

For a second, I thought I heard a siren and that the ship had gone to red alert, but it was just a cat...

Anonymous

Oh yeah, the show definitely looks better starting with season 3. Seems to be more the original footage than the remaster though as all of season 1 looks quite dim and even a bit underexposed. Later seasons have much nicer picture quality with less grain and livelier colours. Of course the visual effects work looks fantastic and what little CGI work they did have to do, blends in well with the rest. Still, going from season 1 to season 2 one of the things I usually notice immediately is the camera work, right into s02e01 they're moving the camera way more and doing all sorts of tracking shots whereas season 1 was much more classic in that regard.

Anonymous

It's sad that they won't just let you guys watch the show on YouTube in peace, there's no way it's hurting CBS and it might even motivate people to watch the show on Netflix or whatever it's on nowadays. Still, I'm happy to spend a little bit of money on the Patreon and this particular episode is one I've been waiting to see a long time :)

Chrissonator

Well, season 1 and 2 were shot with different film stock than season 3. Also, in season 3, a lot of the sets were lit differently, the bridge got a lot brighter. When it comes to the VFX, most effects were done by CBS Digital, in the case of season 1, 3, 5-7. Season 2 was outsourced and one of the original effects supervisors were present, they apparently made season 2 look like the original effects just in HD. Which is why they look so drastically bad compared to seasons done by CBS Digital. Season 4 was also outsourced to another company, but they did loads better than the company in season 2, but still not anything close to seasons done by CBS Digital.

Interesting Katrina should mention The Cybermen. In Doctor Who, The Cybermen do what they do because they are concerned with survival at all costs. While The Borg are the extreme logical conclusion of unrestrained capitalism. As Q said, "The Borg are the ultimate user" "They have identified you as something they can consume"

Bruce Bromley

First let me say the big reason I am here is for Paula and Katerina. Whatever you need to do to the episode to appease those CBS Suits from hassling you is fine. The one thing I did find a bit distracting I about the border was that it was animated. If you could make it static, that would be great. Keep up the great work and kudos to Paula, Kat and the producer behind the scenes. I'm not going anywhere.

Chris Lane- Venturi 3D

Almost forgot to mention, Paula mentioned Captain EO and I 100% agree, the look of the characters in there are very similar to the Borg (EO was a few years earlier). I've tried to look up if there were the same designers but I believe it's just coincidence. Honestly they could both have been inspired by things like HR Giger art (the design inspiration for the Alien franchise movies)

Anonymous

Don't know if I should say this but it's been confirmed that Whoopi Goldberg will appear as Guinan in a future season of the Picard series. Love that there's always been a place for her within the TNG arc.

Anonymous

I loved the vaguely concealed glee on Paula's face as Katrina was reacting to Q, Guinan and the Borg! I am not even done watching your reaction and had to stop to post this. I watch you guys for your reactions, not just the show. I can watch them any time I want. I enjoy your reactions and see my TNG fandom in Paula's reactions and re-live my awe and excitement in Katrina's. Keep up the wonderful reactions and I will continue watching both of you! :)

Bruce Bromley

Paula, you know the Captain has been tugging on his uniform since the beginning. I was sure you were going to point out to Kat that was the other "Picard Maneuver" finally. Katrina, have you given anymore thought in who voices the computer? I'll give you a bit if a hint. It is someone that has been a part of the Star Trek Universe since it's beginning in 1966. 🙂

Colin 3of5

I think the insectoid aliens you are talking about were the parasites from conspiracy (S1 E25) which were also alluded by Admiral Quinn in coming of age (S1 e19)

Colin 3of5

The 1st appearance of 3D chess is in "Where no man has gone before (TOS second pilot)" where Kirk is playing Spock in a 3D chess game.

Anonymous

This is a big one that I've been waiting for all season. I love the borg. I know it will be a while, but are you going to do the TNG movies as well?

Daniel French

It would be great to see them react to the TNG movies as well!! That I would love to see, but it is a long way off

Brandon Scott

"Space Chess" ... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-dimensional_chess .... Confusing hearts and minds since 1907. http://meder.spacechess.org/3dschach/chess3d.htm

Colin 3of5

Very True lol. however I was referring to it's appearance in the show, (not the timeline my fellow nitpickers) , unless I missed a shot of it in the first pilot

Colin 3of5

I think we're a lot closer to Dr Whos 50th than the TNG films.

Anonymous

Totally agree, I am rewatching stuff often now because of the Gals. All CBS is doing is alienating some of their biggest fans.

John

I don't want to make this political, but any form of capitalism we have is based on trade. Whether it's fair, unfair, or whatever, there has to be trade for the economy to function. The Borg do not have an economy. They simply take what they want. They're much more like a virus that consumes resources to expand and grow, then moves to another area to consume new resources.

John

Not only that, but you can see the stress on Paula's face knowing what's coming up and trying very hard to not give away that something is about to happen.

Anonymous

Don't agree. They have the most pure and undiluted economy possible. United in mind and body with the economic and spiritual goal of seeking perfection and comsuming everything and anything. Building, creatiing and absorbing every tool and service to further that economic and spiritual goal. Unlimited expansion, industrialization and unrestrained capitalism .

Mark Chrisco

Two observations: Q may have known the Borg were already on the way and wanted to give humanity a heads up. Having seen the massive WW II miniseries War and Remembrance, I can't dispute it's win in special effects. They don't make'em like this anymore.

John

Fair enough. I don't share your opinion. The basic definition of capitalism is individual ownership of trade and industry. The very idea of individual anything is antithetical to the Borg. That collective hive mind with one single goal in mind sounds a lot more like communism to me where the collective is everything, but honestly I don't see anything about them resembling any form of economy. Their original design being based on insect life, an analogy would be like honeybees or other insects. There is no individuality and all work in concert to grow the collective. But thank you for sharing your views.

Anonymous

I'll just have the last word then. The individual is the one that is the collective. Capitalism only requires one consumer. An economy of one only requires unrestrained expansion and growth and the basic assumption that economics has to be political is flawed. Have fun.

Anonymous

Same. Its one of the main reasons i became a patreon, that and the Doctor who seasons finale. Its a shame it was so hard to know what they were reacting to.

G0d_Ginrai

If they stick to what might be the schedule of starting a new series of Doctor Who at the same time as a new season of TNG, then the 50th should occur around the same time as 4x16 of TNG whilst the TNG movies would happen around Series 10 of Who (or possibly Series 11 if they decide to treat the TNG Movies like an unofficial Season 8). But that all depends on if they even decide to do movie reactions.

Colin 3of5

But before we get to either, there's season 6 of nu who. Which as good as season 5 was, I think that season 6 is better.

Time Lord

Thank you so much for your kind words! We are exploring options for how to approach Season 3 and I think this is a good idea. We'll add it to our ideas and hopefully find a good solution :) -Paula

Anonymous

there were never official rules for it, they just moved the pieces randomly. I think some internet nerds came up with rules. :)

Anonymous

One thing about the remasters, in order to meet the release dates, CBS/Viacom/Paramount (whoever owned the series at the time) employed numerous workshops to get the work done. Season 1 was done by 1 company, season 2 was done by another and they rotated around. Well, Season 2 was a bit of a mess. I'm not sure if they gave the Season 2 company a shot at another season or not.

Chrissonator

Yea, CBS Digital did seasons 1, 3, 5-7. HTV did season 2, and MVF did season 4. However, CBS Digital did all the split episodes, if they spanned into another season that was outsourced, to maintain consistency.

Lucifer Moon

The Design and appearance of the Borg and their ship was heavily influence by the art of H.R. Geiger.
