I love how this episode potrays grief, from two completely opposite ways too. Madoka was downright depressed and cannot even eat without crying. And Sayaka with her avoidance of the subject completely, until they given a chance to talk alone. Kyubey: "okay bye guys Im gonna go find other girls" Also Kyubey when Sayaka is panicking over Kamijo: 👀 👀 👀 Sayaka's thoughts and the ways she deals with them fascinate me, and are completely realistic for a girl her age. In episode 2, she gave a speech about how more people deserve this wish than her. In this episode, she contemplates what she actually wants from Kamijo if she wishes to heal him, and she does take into account Mami's warning in ep 3. She thinks about these things much deeper than many young girls do. And what she said and consider is not wrong either. However, the frustrating thing is her response to those feelings. She starts to deny them and berate herself: saying that she is so privileged that she becomes an ignorant fool in ep 2, saying that she is a terrible person for thinking about these feelings in this ep. Recognizing the possible selfish desires you may have is a good step, but how she deals with them is a different story completely.

Great reaction and discussion!! Man, this episode went hard on grief and depression... All the moments Madoka's grief was shown in this episode were so hard hitting and raw... The way she started crying while eating because she was so relieved that she was alive and so broken about that being at the cost of Mami's life... It broke my heart so much... And the way Sayaka was in such denial and tried to suppress everything, not wanting to talk about it with Madoka, until it all comes spilling out in rash decisions and she becomes a magical girl. Those poor girls... Also, I really loved the way they showed a different type of grief too, with Kyosuke. He just lost a mayor part of his identity! The thing he used to love, music, now can only remind him of the things he will never have again! He is lashing out and being snappy at the person who support him, rageful at the world and at his circumstances. And the self charm he commits when he hurts his hand, the hatred toward the body part that no longer works the way it supposed to.... Its all very common responses for people who suddenly become disabled in some way. Especially since Kyosuke is a teen and those tend to have even less control over the raging emotions that are involved in suddenly losing such a big part of person's autonomy and life. It feels so real and I love that they included that. Also, the way Hitomi was so joyful and happy for committing what was basically a mass suicide was so creepy! And the way Madoka was almost torn to pieces in the witches world was so disturbing...

Yessss, I give Sayaka a hard time, but she is definitely avoiding the discussion and I’m sure is affected by it to a degree, though Madoka’s is much more visceral. That triple-eye emoji you did makes me think of Kyubey running back to Sayaka in that moment! Yeah, I will be honest - I’m not a huge Sayaka fan and haven’t really been in the story so far. Maybe it’s because she comes to some conclusions and deals with certain emotions in a way that’s a bit off-putting to me, personally. Like you noted, she is recognizing her desires and taking things into account internally – but how she’s handling them around others is…a different story, and it makes me want to shake her…ever so slightly! ;) I’ll have to talk about it in a future episode! Thank you for the comment!

Thanks so much! Man, yeah, what an aftermath episode, am I right?! I hated seeing Madoka so sad! She definitely wears her heart on her sleeve and I’m so empathetic towards her. I definitely wanted to give her ALL the hugs! And yessss, I gave Sayaka a hard time, but girl was clearly in denial and suppressing her feelings and then it resulted in her bad decisions…yes, these poor girls! I do like the different types of grief as well being showcased! And yes, losing his identity and lashing out – those types of realistic behaviors – I can totally understand his anger and being upset at himself and everything around him. The character work in this show is REALLY good! And AGREED - Hitomi was way to happy about mass suicide and it was QUITE creepy! The clear winner so far - apart from Mami’s death - for most disturbing moment in this series for me, though, is MOST DEFINITELY the part where the witches nearly TORE MADOKA INTO PIECES. THE FUDGE, SHOW. Insane! Thank you for the comment! I’m…excited *nervous laugh* for the next episode!
