Such a painful couple of episodes. But I’m kinda glad you took some time to process the last episode and I enjoyed your reaction. I just wanted to say something about this episode since Joss had already been planning to kill off Fred but keep her in the show as a different character for a long time before this episode. Actually Fred’s death here and the title of this episode (Shells) was foreshadowed in season 4. In the episode 4x20 (Sacrifice) Fred and Gunn are talking about how Angel has cut himself off from his emotions while on the run from Jasmine: Gunn- “You heard Angel. Feelings don’t enter it anymore.” Fred- “That the world we’re fighting for? The right to be heartless, an uncaring shell, to be dead inside? Then they talk about their shared guilt over killing the professor and then Fred disagrees with Angel’s approach by saying she allows herself to feel those emotions even negative ones like guilt when she tells Gunn: “well I don’t know about you, but…I’d take that over being a shell any day.”

And I thought Tatiana Maslany was good at playing different personalities. Fred's actress does a great job changing the characters mannerism even the way of speaking pretty good.

To be fair to Illyria, she didn't target Fred, she gets treated as Fred’s killer, but Knox made that choice. Illyria clearly wasn't prepared to end up in a human.

Harmony as the MVP of the episode. Rationalising things with Wes and calming him down, and calling out Gunn but also comforting him when he needed it. I suppose she's got to play the caring female character now that Fred is dead.

I have to say I love Amy Acker way more as Illyria than Fred.

I think, A Hole in the World and Shells is a two-part episode for sure. The first scene of AHITW and the final scene of Shells are bookends of Fred and her parents on the day Fred left for LA. I think that’s proof and makes more sense that way.

This was the last episode they finished shooting before they were cancelled. Can you imagine completing these two episodes with such a huge change in characters and then finding out you were cancelled? It's been 18 years and I'm still salty about this.

2024-02-10 23:14:45 This episode made A Place Called Home by Kim Richey one of my favourite songs - the bohemian, astrological imagery affects me in the same way as The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (and Doctor Who, which Douglas Adams also wrote for), Abba's Fernando, and a rock song that I won't mention because it's now associable with a spoiler. I think this song would serve well as a Daenerys theme.

As devastating as Fred's death was and still is, the Illyria storyline is one of my absolute favourites. Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof absolutely SHINE

From the previous episode: Gunn: And to add the necessary boilerplate, you ever hurt her, I'm gonna kill ya like a chicken. Wesley: Acceptable terms.
