Erm.

Okay. It's a REAL damn shame that the THREEEEEE (too many and different may i add) video singles were the "best" in terms of production/identity and the rest of the album was super disappointing/forgettable/generic and just soo random.

There's a lot going wrong with NMIXX and the biggest issue as someone mentioned on discord is that they're about to get to their 2nd year anniversary and they are yet to establish a sound/image/persona which is wild. Besides being militant and disciplined which I discussed, that's literally it and it shows in their work  and inconsistency in sound.

Someone else also mentioned they lack charisma or at least stand out members with charisma and I'm inclined to agree. As a group they're missing star quality, talent is not enough sometimes because they SING but you want someone who has that spark and energy, draws you in for reasons you CAN'T explain and I realised that's why they've never excited me in all this time even though I've liked some songs. Of course this is subjective but I realise I've never really seen edits/tiktoks about any of the members or even the group which makes me think they're not particularly popular or have stand out persona's as inidviduals. You know like a Xiaoting, Wonyoung, Chaewon, Ryujin, Karina type.

And with those members there's others in their groups I could pick that also have that and it's SO important.

On the PLUS side I do feel as though their producer are executing the mixx ups MUCH better this time around and I definitely enjoyed them more!

Your thoughts on the album?

I was looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Dash so I skipped right to that LOL. I immediately liked Dash on first listen, I think it's without a doubt their best title track on a first listen and repeat perspective. I have stood by NMIXX's music not being very enjoyable since their debut, even if there are songs from them I personally like, but this is the first time I had an NMIXX song I didn't want to end lol. But I agree with all your thoughts on it. A lot of the production choices I enjoyed, the beat, the harmonies, the VOCALS that they were slightly giving, and I fucking love this song, but the song is still weak if that makes sense?! You are sooo right, they should have leaned into that R&B vibe so heavy. They should have given way more vocals than they did. I wanted to hear more of Lily and Bae, Haewon too. Very disappointed it's under 3 minutes too, they could have fleshed the song out so much more with a longer run time. The song feels super incomplete and ends abruptly especially considering the change-up takes up a pretty good portion of an already short song. I hate where music is going with these sub-3 minute long songs. I don't like saying this, because I feel it takes away from the hard work that goes into this stuff, but imo, I really feel these girls' talent is being wasted. I LOVED this song, but I want more, NMIXX is clearly capable of more and I think JYP is doing them dirty. They can sing and dance. I think Dash as a song is a big improvement and I hope as time goes on they lean more into jazzy/R&B stuff because the girls' voices clearly work for it. I understand NMIXX's concept seems to be having those "messy" switch-ups and chaotic sound, but I also think NMIXX have suffered for it, especially because I think JYP's production as a company is pretty weak. I have wanted so badly to enjoy an NMIXX song and I got this one, but let's do some more with the girls please lol. Now I have to check out the rest of the album and songs and come back to update with my thoughts and see the rest of your reactions lol.

ida about them not having a sound. the only misstep in their sound was the summer ep imo. those songs could have went to any gg. with expergo and this mini i can listen to most of those tracks excluding maybe 2 and say that's a nmixx song. outside of break the wall (a song that could have gone to anyone) i thought it was a solid mini. however ia with the standout member comment. the members DO bring it on stage but they lack a center/star of the group that you immediately identify as the group's face.

the looks of disgust 😩 i loved this album so much im sad you didnt enjoy! but i definitely did agree with some of your criticisms. the general consensus on it seems to be pretty positive though so i wonder what they will do next, truly. We’ll have to see when their full album comes out. (whenever that is). Twice is next up for JYP releases i believe so fingers crossed that that is good ❤️

I really loved this mini! The only song I didn’t love was Boom. While vocals aren’t everything, I’m always wayyy more interested in groups that I know can sing and NMIXX dance practices feed my soul! I definitely agree that the change ups are becoming less chaotic which is a good sign. I also agree that they don’t really have a standout member. Sometimes I feel like their choreography is chaotic/nonstop movement (if that makes sense) so it doesn’t give the girls time to shine. I really hope they are given some ballads soon because that would also help with emoting/stage presence.

Koko3op

Love this! And yes lol please check out the rest and let me know and I totally get what you mean, the song is still weak yet not it's crazy.

Koko3op

That's a fair point actually the summer ep was definitely the most generic but so were these bsides I feel. Their title tracks don't have that issue though and YES that's also a great point, that center/star of the group is what's missing!

Koko3op

Hahah it was more confusion that disgust I promise LOOOL. Yeahh fingers crossed.

Koko3op

OMG yes you're right! The choreo needs room to breathe and I think that's why run for roses felt so chaotic to me. They need to work on more killing parts and getting the members out of their shells.

oh thank god 😭 im ngl i bussed out laughin the first time you made a face but still i was like oh no :7)::0!;9;)

Anita

I loved this mini overall! the only song I thought was very basic was break the wall but I agree that there were a lot of places where there was more potential to elevate the production. I was also mad about that one section of boom not being brought back lol and dash needed another postchorus at the end. I agree about the lack of a center or stand out member. From their predebut stuff I was sure it was going to be Jinni but once they debuted her presence wasn’t as strong as predebut and then she ended up leaving. I’m not sure totally what the disconnect is because when I watch their concert fancams they are incredible live performers and have distinct qualities from one another. i honestly think a lot of it might just come down to the way jyp as a company does not really focus on cultivating individual popularity and the fact that elements of their concept/choreo limit and overshadow their ability to really stand out. Overall, I think they are going in a positive direction in terms of the mixxpop concept and i hope this will continue through their following releases. If you have time I would love if you can check out bae’s mujin service!

Koko3op

Oooo yes everything you said in your middle paragraph I completely agree with and it makes complete sense and yes Jinni did end up blending in a bit more for sure.

Joe B

Dash floored me ngl I LOVE it. The vocals are just beautiful.

Skipz12

Damn I agreed with everything except for the Dash chorus that’s literally my favorite GG chorus in a minute lmao. Regarding though lack of center I honestly think Jinni was that and since her absence we’ve missed out on a it girl, cause honestly given how she was received during pre debut and with soñar and dash being more her style I can’t help but think she would have brought that extra star quality to this album, for the first time since she left I found myself thinking imagine Jinni center on this. Sullyoon has the visual but outside of spectacular vocals and dance she’s too blank on stage to fill that role. Kyujin honestly has all the stage presence but maybe her youth and age keep her from being that center spark they need

Koko3op

Ahhhh yess makes sense! Yeahh Kyujin is a bit TOO much at times. Once she learns how to work it it’ll be better.

Hammhoxx

I quite enjoyed this mini, while I do agree that some of the choices on the production side needed someone with FLAVOR in the booth. I feel like for me, the standout in this group would be Kyujin, she always brings it and gives me the energy that I need. I am thankful that K-pop is trying to bring bridges back a bit BUT WHERE ARE THE SECOND VERSES???? Like the chorus ends and we get two bars for a second verse then its back into the chorus?!?!?

Koko3op

Yeahh Kyujin definitely does have it but I feel ilke she has ONE setting which is "FIERCE" lol and I've love for her to find some more nuance. Ahhh I didn't even notice they're cutting down the 2nd verses, damn!

Brooke

Wow this is why I love watching your videos. Your comments really have me thinking. The fact that we’ve rarely seen edits of the members actually says a lot! Although they are all extremely talented, there is no member that actually stands out. That’s when I started to reflect on the time that they had first debuted because I remember really enjoying them as a group despite all the controversies going around about their music. No matter how bad the song was, I always found myself enjoying their stages. But then I remembered that once upon a time, Jinni left nmixx. I thought I would get used to it after a while but I still feel that there is a huge gap. Jinni was such a great center. i don’t know if you remember but from her solo pre-debut performances, she was so natural and effortless yet stood out so much. i remember seeing many edits of her being the girl in pink pants in the press dance cover. After jinni left, Kyujin pretty much became center now and although she is crazy talented, it feels like too much. Her and jinni created balance when they were both in the center. However I don’t blame the nmixx girls at all for this as a member leaving must be hard to adjust to, especially when you have to fill in for a member who stood out so much.

Mint

Not much to add but really agree with your comment. I also really liked Dash (could be best TT). But, at the same time, can immediately think of so many improvement opportunities. Some elements of the song worked so much better than others

Mint

Album B-sides may be a bit disappointing but I personally feel that they cracked the code with the 3 co-TTs (Dash, Roses, Sonar). I absolutely loved them and have them on repeat. I am really hoping these succeed well on the charts so that their team will follow along this path in future On choreo, I didn't actually realize until it was pointed out. Their choreos are too busy, and its the same problem with Itzy's nowadays. Very technically demanding, but insufficient killing parts. Regarding star quality & stan attraction, the one member who seems to be quietly doing work here is Haewon. But hers is more of the off-stage live/variety + elder sister/friend vibe. Which ties into the fact that Nmixx seems to be finding an audience of younger girls (which is a good sign for GG longevity). But overall yes, they don't have that Wonyoung/Chaewon level attention attractor Lastly, could you hopefully react to their Stage Practices again in future? Those, as usual, are truly impressive

Neeko

They have so much talent that it actually makes me sad that their songs don't always reflect. I said it when I first watched the MV but they could totally do some r&b that would eatttt!

Koko3op

Thank you! And yes it's just an unfortunate case of bad luck for them really. They needed Jinni for sure and yes I remember the pink pants. She just had the star quality they needed.

Koko3op

Yess those 3 TT's were definitely going in the right direction and had me thinking the bsides would be better but at least they worked. Yess the choreo is all about technicality but lacking fun and killing parts which is an issue I have with a lot of boy groups also. Yes I'll probably check out more of their stage practices.

Jay Nice

I agree that the 3 that were release were the best ones out of the whole EP. Especially since the first EP was in my top 5 albums last year. So I can’t deny, I am a little disappointed in the bsides for this EP. Now the reason behind the performance video for Run for roses I think in part has to do with the fact that they been performing this song in NMIXX University, which is like a fan club concert. I guess they didn’t want to spend the extra budget but they knew the fans loved the song. I been a fan since pre debut, and they were asked about the music they do and they answered it’s music they love… the problem with Mixpop, it may come off as them not having a sound but the sound is mixpop… they tried the 90s thing I think to get newer fans because the mixing can be jarring but I agree, they getting better at it.

Koko3op

Ahhhhhh ok that's why they did a performance video. Makes sense. Also the mixpop songs actually have more of an identity for sure but the love me like this and summer EP era just made it all the more confusing but they're headed in the right direction for sure.

Andrew Wendt

nothing worse than groups that can REALLY sing doing music that sub par vocalists would release. I blame ariana grande.
