So the colored squares are simply props but they represent some sort of physical media like cassette tapes or a floppy disk. They use these props to put into slots in the dining room in some episodes to get food or put them into computers. Btw Garry Lockwood is notable in that 2 years after this he appears in Kubricks 2001.
