The whole Mai and Trunks relationship is one of the wierdest decisions ever when it comes to Dragon Ball. I believe Toriyama once said he was terrible at writing romance. Hence why its never really a focus. Dragon Ball as a whole is really meant to be an action/adventure series with the addition that Toriyama has a history of doing Gag Manga which you can definitely see elements of in Dragon Ball with the really silly moments.

Interesting. Because he can do sweet and endearing and has a grasp on relationships. The relationship between Goku and Chi-Chi might not be romantic, but it's very real. And obviously the silly he is the best at which we love

No, it’s not romantic. I think it is misunderstood and highly underrated by fans. I quite like their relationship. It doesn’t have to be overtly romantic. Plus knowing the full extent of their relationship going back to the OG Dragon Ball makes it really sweet.
