I feel your pain Martin....currently trying to build a diorama/vignette for a railroad/midget sub subject and the base is giving me more grief than the model build and painting itself! I think when we build a dio we want our models to be shown off without taking anything away from it with the base.....As Eric & Nigel said too hard on ourselves and our own worst critics.....love this base, it’s simple and to the point...and yes, one fence to many...but hell , if it was easy we wouldn’t do it!

Martin, suggestion for your next base-put some masking tape down where the tracks will touch the base and don't apply ground work to those areas. When you apply the ground work, you can pull the masking tape up and have a nice clean area that you won't have to worry about having floating tracks over the terrian. Another suggestion is to use old rubber band style tracks or even length of LTL tracks to make the impressions of track into the ground work without using the model and possibly damaging it by pushing it into the ground work. I picked up both these techniques from Steve Zaloga in the books he's done.'

I find it easy to get lost in all the techniques while building a base, and forget about basics like layout, interesting ideas etc. At least that was the case with this one. But it was a huge learning experience and I can't wait for redemption with the next one!

Thanks Scott, you're right. The issue here was I didn't have any spare tracks in this scale, no leftovers from the E8 or anything. Already learned from this mistake and I have leftover segments from the Crusader which I'm gonna use to stamp the groundwork. Also I was heavily overthinking stuff on this base, but the FAQ Diorama book shows how things can be done much easier with great results. The next one will be much better!
